Disco skirt....

This outfit is one of my favourites (don't tell the others!) - there’s nothing better than a brightly coloured blazer and a shiny pleated metallic skirt of dreams (thanks Monki!) to make you feel fancy. I am a complete magpie and  love anything shiny and although I already have a coppery metallic skirt (ahem) this looks much nicer with cool blue and green colours and is actually much easier to wear (mainly due to the slightly shorter length). It’s always good to know that you have both ends of the shiny skirt spectrum covered though and it's always good to have an unusual wardrobe staple too… I was going to leave the houselike this but it was freezing outside so I added my grey short-sleeved jumper.  My colleagues thought I looked like a jazzy 1940s secretary, never a bad thing in my book!

Blazer: Miss Selfridge via Matilda, top: Oasis, necklace: New Look, skirt: Monki, shoes: Marks & Spencer
My hair has grown so much already (I can see that my haircuts are going to become an expensive habit!) but I really love it at this length. I am loving the sunnier days too, my peachy coral make-up is getting a proper showing recently! The Dr Jart+ Platinum BB Beauty Balm may be expensive but it is so worth it...

I mean just look how shiny this skirt is! The mini pleats are super flattering and skim over my sizeable hips. I love the length of this too, I prefer to wear skirts high on the waist but you could make it even longer by wearing it on the hips. I will even be able to wear it without any tights once we hit the summer, I love an outfit I can wear all year round!

Do you have any unusual style staples?

Teapots and mustard...

Occasionally certain pieces of clothing become extremely popular with the blogging community and this Very teapot dress is another one of those blogger specials! Both Sarah and Gemma  own it (and look absolutely gorgeous in it!) and when you see its cute print and flattering shape, you can understand why it is just so popular. I had a bit of trouble getting hold of a dress in the right size (if anyone is interested in buying a size 10 version, please let me know!) but when it arrived, I couldn't have been happier.  The fit is true to size (perhaps a little generous around the bust) and it is really easy to wear. I paired my dress with all mustard accessories but you could easily pick up some of the other colours in the pattern and pair it with purple or red too! Very is not a brand I have ever bought from before as I was always put off by the fact it seemed like you had to sign up for store credit to pay for your (fairly expensive) purchases (you don't FYI) but I was really pleased with this dress and I will be keeping an eye out for their sale- I want this dress in every colour and print!

Dress: Very, shoes: c/o Zalando, belt: Miss Selfridge (off a playsuit)
I am always slightly wary of dresses with sleeves, they are much more flattering on my less than slender arms (at least until I get on with actually doing Sophie’s triceps exercises!) but as a 'human radiator', I always get far too warm. Luckily these ones are  loose enough that your arms don’t get all claustrophobic (surely this can’t just be me?!) and gently skim over my wobbly bits thanks to some oh so flattering ruching...

I mean just look how flattering this dress is! The shape of this dress reminded me of a classic 1940s tea dress so I wanted some quite classic shoes to pair with it. These mustard shoes were sent to me a while ago but I don’t wear them as much as I would like as I always forget that I have them (oops). I am always a bit wary of wearing heels when I have to get the train (I blame falling flat on my face one winter evening for that one!) but this pair are reassuringly ‘solid’. Mustard can be a difficult colour to wear but I really love it with navy; it is much more interesting than beige or cream but it still looks quite classic.

Please ignore the creases in the dress, I have just realised how much this needed ironing!
Have you succumbed to the lure of this Very nice dress? (har har)

Thigh high...

I always love the Topshop sale and the reduced prices give me a chance to try things` that are more trend-led without breaking the bank. Ever since the 'Angelina leg incident' of 2012, splits in dresses and skirts have been a bit of a 'thing' and although this dress is so out of character for me, I can't help but love it. I would never normally go for a midi length but the flash of thigh (ooer) definitely helps to make it more wearable and I quite like how cool it makes me feel when paired with my boots. I feel like my style has been in flux recently (I never thought I would be buying such jazzy leggings for example!) and since clearing out my wardrobe, I have definitely been more experimental with my clothes. Who knows what I will be wearing next week?!

Dress: Topshop, jacket: New Look, belt: Miss Selfridge, shoes: ankle boots c/o Spartoo
The shape of the dress itself is quite classic and reminds me of a 1940s tea dress (I think it's the sleeves that do it) although I doubt there would have been quite as much cleavage on show 70 odd years ago, I couldn't believe just how boobalicious this dress was! ;)

The print and bright colours were what originally drew me to the dress and they helped to make an unfamiliar shape and style more comfortable for me. I just noticed that my belt is wonky in this photo and it is driving me mad, I only wish I realised before Mark took these photos!

Flashing a bit of leg and showing off my favourite ankle boots in the world, I am seriously worried that these will wear out soon and so far Betty London shoes haven't been added back onto the Spartoo website (although they do have them on their Belgian site) Is it too excessive to ship them from overseas?!

Goofy face: model's own
Have you bought any out-of-character clothes recently?
P.S. This post was done in collaboration with Spartoo

Tweed and lace...

Tweed is one of those fabrics that I really love. Whether it is the country girl in me or just because I can't resist these most Autumnal of fabrics, if I see something even vaguely tweedy, you can guarantee that it will end up coming home with me! This dress was an impulse buy from Tesco early one weekday morning but despite that, I really love it! I have worn it quite a few times when I need to feel more pulled together at work and it always gets complimented (which is always nice!) I have just realised that everything but the tights in this outfit is from Tesco, clearly I can't resist their clothing ;)

Dress: Tesco, cardigan: Tesco, tights: John Lewis, shoes: Tesco
As it has still been pretty warm recently, I didn't need anything more than my cardigan to keep warm but I plan to layer this dress up with sheer shirts and blouses when the temperatures do drop, I have a green top that would go perfectly with the checked pattern.

My favourite part of this dress though has to be the delicate lace overlay that covers the top (although I wish I went either a little higher or lower on the bodice rather than stopping halfway down my chest, I just think it looks a bit odd!) I wanted to show off the lace but wearing my hair up looked too harsh so I went for soft side swept curls instead. Paired with my new Revlon lipstain in Berry Crush it felt properly Autumnal!

Originally I was going to pair this with either brown or black tights but neither looked quite right and these burgundy ones are way more fun and definitely one of my hardest working sales buys, I have literally had these for years and without fail, they get pulled out every Autumn! I was going to wear them with my burgundy heels but instead I went for these wedges which are much easier to walk in!

Film noir inspired...

These photos have been sitting on my computer for a while now, I took them way back in March but I have been a bit unsure about using them which is strange.I loved the outfit and I quite like how the photos came out  but the photos are a bit 'posier' than I am used to and it felt slightly like a costume rather than an outfit. I had been looking for a proper mac/raincoat for a while now and I picked up this Paul Costelloe number up in a charity shop for a few pounds. It is very light but keeps out even the sharpest of showers and although I think I need to get it tailored  and perhaps shortened (there is a lot of material here!) I really love this coat.  The oversized lapels and collar make me feel like I could be a film noir detective- those guys knew how to work a trench coat!

Coat: Paul Costelloe via charity shop, dress: Sugarhill Boutique, shoes: Marks & Spencer, goofy pose: model's own

Paired with a rather cute tea dress and some rather vampy heels, I felt like a proper femme fatale! I love Sugarhill Boutique dresses (Sarah has an enviable amount which I am very jealous of!) but had always put off buying them as I wasn't sure how they would fit. I spotted this one reduced on Amazon and decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to try out the brand. One thing I would say is that this is pretty short, you can see from the photo how much leg is on show and when I wore it to work with some flat shoes, I felt a bit exposed. This is definitely one for the weekend when you aren't going to be constantly trying to pull it down all day! This jazzy red clutch doesn't get many outings but I have been trying to use it a bit more when I go out as it is pretty roomy. I bought it on a college trip when Sophie and I bunked off from the British Museum for an hour or so to hit up Oxford Street, smuggling it back on the coach was pretty funny!

Belt: Primark, bag: Dorothy Perkins
Brushed out curls, cat-eye glasses and a slick of red lipstick topped off the 1940s look. I love the print on this dress too, the little rocking horses are adorable!

I fell in love with these shoes as soon as I laid eyes on them back in the January sales and I knew they would be the perfect finishing touch to this outfit, I just need to find a way to make them stay on my feet. I seem to just fall forward in them which is bad news for someone with such atrocious balance as I have!
