Candy pink...

Bright colours have long been a staple in my wardrobe and this candy pink Whistles dress was a fun workwear addition. The shape was boxier than I would usually go for but paired with some fun shoes and a jazzy necklace, it was much more firmly in my comfort zone. I am a big fan of sleeveless dresses (I am always warm!) and I can't wait to layer this one up with some stripes and a polo neck!

Dress: Whistles (via eBay), shoes: Topshop, necklace: Topshop
I have had this necklace for nigh on 7 years (!) and although the attached leaf is long gone, it is still one of the pieces of jewellery I have on regular rotation. It is simple but so unusual, not bad for a Topshop sale bargain! My hair has got so much longer recently and I have really been enjoying brushing it out into soft waves. It does have a mind of its own so I sometimes have to use my GHDs to help tame it. I really should do more with my hair as it does hold a style when I bother but I am just too lazy, I would much rather have an extra 20 minutes in bed...

These shoes were another Topshop bargain a while back and I love them They are ridiculously comfy and make a real statement without being completely impractical. I am always a bit wary of wearing heels with higher hemlines but I think the chunky block heel and the straps helps to stop them from looking too much, what do you think?

Interesting workwear for a smart office...

Since starting my new job, I have had to get back into the habit of wearing smarter clothes for work. Whilst I miss my more casual workwear, it has been good to challenge myself and push out of my (very literal) comfort zone. Life's too short to wear boring clothes so I have been wearing a lot of fun printed dresses (this geometric number and this blocky beauty were particular favourites) to make it a but more interesting. I have been lucky enough to find a few dresses in my favourite charity shop to add to my collection, including this beautiful printed one from Hobbs. The shape isn't one I would usually go for but the drawstring waist was able to cinch me in and it is so light to wear, making it perfect for the summer!

Hobbs orange Broughton dress
Dress: Hobbs via charity shop, tights:Tesco, shoes: Whistles
I love the slash neck on this and the print is really unusual, does anyone else think it looks like rain? I have been trying to be more inventive with how I style my hair and I was pretty pleased with this sleeker look, thank goodness for my GHDs!

I wear these Whistles shoes a lot and I am cautious abut wearing them out as they are just so darned comfy! Has anyone seen any interesting black blocky heels recently? I need to find an alternative to these but ideally with a pointed toe too... let me know if you have more luck than I do!

What do you wear to work? Where do you buy interesting workwear from?

Tips for starting a new job...

As you may have seen (!) I have just started a new job and although it has been a bit of a whirlwind so far, I thought sharing some hints and tips might be useful to anyone starting somewhere new. I was at my last job for 3 years so it has been a while since I was a newbie and I was in a right tizz last Monday! I thought I would share my tips for starting a new job and my thought processes for them. Please bear in mind that this is only my experience and one working in a fairly smart office so please be led by your company's guidelines!

Left- dress: Oasis, shoes: Marks & Spencer, middle- top: Warehouse, trousers: ASOS, shoes: French Sole c/o Spartoo, right- dress: Sainsbury's, shoes: c/o Tesco

* Wear an old favourite on your first day- you need to look professional but feeling comfortable is so important! Originally I was going to wear trousers but I always feel more comfortable in a dress so I went for a navy Tesco dress (which sadly I didn't manage to get pictures of). I am contradicting myself slightly here as I only bought this dress in the charity shop a few weeks ago but both the colour and shape felt classic Maria so it was hardly out of my comfort zone! So far I have worn my smarter dresses and trousers with blouses rather than t-shirts and have only had positive feedback which is good!

* Be led by your colleagues on dress code- this will save any embarrassment, for example I found out on day one that jeans were a big no no (except on dress down Fridays) so I had to mentally revise some planned outfits as a result. I did find out that brightly coloured hair was OK though so that gave me some food for thought ;) This also means that you won't go out and spend unnecessary money on clothes that won't be suitable, whilst giving you an excuse to buy 'stuff for work'!

* Neutral make-up is key for your first few days. I am a massive fan of bright lipsticks but my first day was probably not the time to be worrying about whether it needs reapplying or if I have smudged it. I went for soft peachy lipstick and kept the rest pretty simple. You want people to remember your face, not just your make-up! Now I am in week 2 I feel a lot more comfortable and I am back to my usual colourful self!

* Wear comfy shoes- you will be introduced to a lot of people and probably shown round the office. I have done a lot of walking this week so have been wearing flat shoes to save my poor battered feet. It is only a mile or so each way but I may have to become one of those people who wears trainers to walk in and just change my shoes at work instead...

* Get a floor plan- this is really helpful when trying to learn people's names and also means you don't have to wander around awkwardly trying to find the toilets...

* Take plasters, paracetamol etc. but don't overpack your bag- I am very accident prone so being prepared is key but there is nothing worse than having to heft a huge bag around, especially on an unfamiliar commute!

* Take in a water bottle- this at least means you can stay hydrated until you know what the situation is on tea and coffee. There's nothing worse than having a dry scratchy throat, especially as you will be doing a lot of talking.

* Food- luckily my diabetes means I have an excuse for carting around so much food (ahem) but I can guarantee that you will be absolutely starving. Nerves and adrenaline are a lethal combination and if you're anything like me, you will be ravenous by 10 o' clock so making sure you have a bag filled with food is always a good idea...

* Take a notebook and a pen in with you- I took the one which I had used for interview prep and was able to refamiliarize myself with all the notes I had made previously, whilst waiting for people to arrive etc. It gave me something to focus on and I felt slightly less out of my depth as a result.

* Bring something to do- Until you know what the deal is with your training schedule and lunch tomes, it is probably best to not go wandering off at lunchtime. I normally have a book or something to do in my bag and so far I have read The Talented Mr Ripley in my lunch break and have nearly finished The Secret History so far. I never seem to get much reading done at home so my desk is an ideal spot to catch up on my 'to read' list...

* Chewing gum- this is pretty self explanatory but I am always super paranoid about my breath, especially if I am meeting lots of new people.

*Take up opportunities to make friends- I am super shy when I meet new people and being the newbie is always hard, especially when you are moving into a close knit team but I have found that gestures like going out for lunch or offering to make tea or coffee will go a long way towards endearing you to your new colleagues. Obviously you are all lovely people but it doesn't hurt to remind people of this! ;)

* Ask lots of questions- you may feel awkward about it but it is better than going wrong and having to explain that to your new boss or team. They will want to help you and you can get away with pestering people a lot more easily in the first few weeks!

* Write everything down: I am a keen note-taker anyway but your induction means taking in a lot of information and having things written down makes it a lot easier to go back over them when you have time.

* Don't be afraid to push for training or to be included in meetings- when you are new, people can forget to include you in an an email or add your name to a list. I gave found that being perky and inviting myself along to things I think are relevant or helpful for my job has been really useful and things have slotted into place a lot quicker.Being pushy can be hard but it saves scrabbling to catch up later!

* Give yourself time to get used to the change- moving jobs is a big deal and you will probably be massively overtired and emotional for your first few weeks. Make sure you take care of yourself and don't beat yourself up if you haven't got your routine settled yet. I am not ashamed to say that ready meals and chippy runs have kept me going this past fortnight along with long showers and plenty of early nights...

* Sort out your routine- I am someone who thrives on structure in their life so finding a new morning routine has been important, if a little tricky. I found that the easiest way to do it was work out how long it would take me to get to work, and then work backwards to see how long I needed to get ready in the morning. It's not quite set in stone yet, but I'm getting there!

Hopefully this is slightly helpful for people, please do let me know if you have any other questions and I will do my best to answer them!

Simple summer workwear...

Another day, another summery outfit! I bought this stripy dress in the Gap sale a while ago and have been waiting for the weather to be warm enough to wear it. Summer workwear is a tough one, especially if you have a stricter dress code than I do (I certainly don't tend to be this smart at work usually) but crisp dresses and bright accessories are a pretty safe bet. They feel professional but still fun and this outfit ticks all the boxes for me, I can't be dealing with fussy outfits when it is warm outside! I am impressed that I managed to keep this clean for the entire day when I wore it, no mean feat when you are as clumsy as I am! Gap's shift dresses can be a bit hit and miss on me, they can look a bit sack-like on me and the waist often hits me in completely the wrong place but this one is surprisingly flattering. It is loose enough to be comfortable in a hot office but the tie waist helps me feel less shapeless. Don't get me wrong, I love oversized pieces but I just look and feel awkward when I try and pull them off!

Dress: Gap, necklace: New Look, shoes: Clarks
Another outing for the Max Factor Colour Intensifying Balm in 'Charming Coral'. It is such a lovely peachy shade and ideal for when the weather is hot, I can't be dealing with a full face of make-up when the temperatures reach the twenties! You also get a better look at the subtle stripe pattern here too, it makes the dress way more interesting and the double layering of the fabric also helps to make the dress less sheer too, win win! This necklace is one of my favourite things to wear in the summer and I love the fact that it goes perfectly with the rest of my coral accessories, I do like things to match ;)

This bag is just so cheery and the white makes that gorgeous coral shade pop even more! Isn't the patterned leather the cutest?!

I couldn't resist wearing these shoes either, they are just such a good colour and you can't help but smile when you have such a cheery pair of shoes on your feet!

How do you dress for work in the summer?

Disco skirt....

This outfit is one of my favourites (don't tell the others!) - there’s nothing better than a brightly coloured blazer and a shiny pleated metallic skirt of dreams (thanks Monki!) to make you feel fancy. I am a complete magpie and  love anything shiny and although I already have a coppery metallic skirt (ahem) this looks much nicer with cool blue and green colours and is actually much easier to wear (mainly due to the slightly shorter length). It’s always good to know that you have both ends of the shiny skirt spectrum covered though and it's always good to have an unusual wardrobe staple too… I was going to leave the houselike this but it was freezing outside so I added my grey short-sleeved jumper.  My colleagues thought I looked like a jazzy 1940s secretary, never a bad thing in my book!

Blazer: Miss Selfridge via Matilda, top: Oasis, necklace: New Look, skirt: Monki, shoes: Marks & Spencer
My hair has grown so much already (I can see that my haircuts are going to become an expensive habit!) but I really love it at this length. I am loving the sunnier days too, my peachy coral make-up is getting a proper showing recently! The Dr Jart+ Platinum BB Beauty Balm may be expensive but it is so worth it...

I mean just look how shiny this skirt is! The mini pleats are super flattering and skim over my sizeable hips. I love the length of this too, I prefer to wear skirts high on the waist but you could make it even longer by wearing it on the hips. I will even be able to wear it without any tights once we hit the summer, I love an outfit I can wear all year round!

Do you have any unusual style staples?

Drapery and denim...

I used to spend a lot of time stalking my local charity shops hunting out bargains and my final year at uni was a goldmine for bargains. Seriously, if you are anywhere near Kenilworth, go and have a rummage, the shops there have the nicest stock!  Tewkesbury also has some awesome ones and I picked this top up a few weeks before Christmas but it has been hanging unworn in my wardrobe. I really love the colour but I wasn't sure how to style it. I have a couple of white and striped draped tops from H&M already but the colour of this one makes it much more difficult to  wear- at least in my head. I originally planned to wear this with either a patterned skirt or blazer but the colour was statement enough by itself.

Blazer: New Look, top: Jasper Conran via charity shop, jeans: Topshop, shoes: Marks and Spencer
Now I have worn it once, the fear is gone and I will be wearing this a lot over the summer. I knew this top reminded me of something- this coral dress from H&M! The colour is a lot brighter but it is the perfect colour for summer, I'm just imagining it with turquoise jewellery... Drapery is one of my favourite details on clothing and I think it is super flattering too, especially if it has some clever gathering like this one does!

I am still on the hunt for some new jeans- I love the stretch of these but hoicking them up has been driving me mad recently. Does anyone have any recommendations for indigo high-waisted jeans? I am at my wits end now! I dug out this owl necklace to add a bit of interest too, I have had it for years and it is one of my favourite pieces of jewellery, owl themed or otherwise!

What details do you look for with clothes?

Geometric florals...

This is possibly my favourite outfit from all the years I have been blogging. It felt really fun and still 'me' but it felt a bit more grown up too, something I often struggle with! It also feels very spring like which is a plus although I actually wore this back in January when the weather was anything but. You know me, always being contrary! ;) I also just realised that all of these things were sales buys, there's nothing like some money off to push you out of your comfort zone!

Blouse: Topshop, skirt: Oasis, necklace: New Look, shoes: Stylist Pick c/o Spartoo

More and more I have found that there aren't many clothes that I can wear from Topshop but occasionally they come out with a corker, this shirt being a case in point. They have taken a plain white shirt and instantly made it way more interesting with a sheer panel and a mullet hem. (I told you more and more would sneak into my wardrobe!) This necklace is my go-to whenever I need to add a bit of interest to an outfit, it's the perfect length and looks way more expensive than the £3 I paid for it!

This skirt was such a bargain from Oasis when I bought it in the sales after Christmas, the print really reminded me of this Boutique by Jaeger one but actually I think it is much nicer. I have been wearing a lot of jazzy skirts recently and this is the perfect print for Spring, I love the geometric florals!

What's been your best sale bargain recently?

Jazzy skirt...

When I won the lovely Law's Tesco voucher competition a while ago, I was really chuffed. I love Tesco clothes and I couldn't wait to pick out some new bits and pieces for my wardrobe. I usually head straight for the dresses but I have been trying to incorporate more separates into my wardrobe so instead I went for this lovely boxy top and patterned skirt. Paired with my bright blue blazer and my oversized glasses, I was told that I looked like a bit of a marketing cliché , can you tell that I work in a creative industry?! ;) I wore this outfit to chair a meeting and it was perfect, I felt confident, but still pulled together, a difficult combination to get right! Until I can steal Harriet's wardrobe, this will have to be my go to when I need a little confidence boost...

Blazer: c/o Matalan, top: Tesco, skirt: Tesco, tights: Tesco, shoes: Clarks, necklace: New Look

I was so pleased when I unwrapped this top, I wear a lot of white tops and am always pleased to add another one to my collection. I love the sleeves on this one and the fact that it is slightly textured is just the icing on the cake. It is a boxier shape than I would normally wear but I think this works better with a bodycon skirt or skinny trousers. I don't play with the proportions of my clothes very often but I think I need to based on how much I love this top!

Here you can see the texture of the top a bit better and also the gorgeous pattern on this skirt. I sized up as I didn't want it to be too skin-tight but actually the fit is pretty generous, so definitely go for your usual size or even one down. This was sitting a lot lower on my hips than I would like but at least it made it a slightly more work-appropriate length! Sometimes I find patterned skirts quite difficult to wear but I think with a shorter length, they are quite a fun way to add a bit of interest to an outfit, what do you think?

How would you style a patterned skirt?

Wearing lime green and Doc Martens...

I have tried a lot of things since I started blogging (wearing leggings, rediscovered jeans and peplums) but I honestly never thought that you would one day catch me on an outfit that combines two unlikely pieces of clothing. Although I love bright colours, I have never worn lime green as I was convinced that it didn't suit me and that I wasn't able to pull it off. Great on other people but just not for me. The same was true of Dr. Martens and yet here I am , proudly sporting a pair (and outside of the house too!) This White Stuff jumper was another kind gift from Matilda and it has been sitting in my wardrobe for months as I had no idea what to pair it with. Luckily my trusty black pleated skirt came to the rescue and actually made this whole ensemble feel much more 'me'. I may never be super cool but I can at least use the DMs to add some edge to my usual girly appearance!

Jumper:White Stuff via Matilda, camisole: Laura Ashley via Mum, skirt: French Connection, belt: Miss Selfridge, necklace: Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, shoes: Dr. Martens

This gorgeous necklace was a purchase from the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry (well worth a visit by the way) and it is one of my favourites. I am pretty rubbish with accessorizing (unless belts count) and always worry that I have overdone it on the jewellery stakes but luckily this necklace is delicate enough not to be overwhelming...

I have had these boots for a while now but every time I came to wear them out of the house, I chickened out. They just seemed like too much of a statement but the bad weather seemed like the perfect opportunity to bust them out and oh boy am I glad I did! This has to be one of my most complimented work outfits EVER (and it couldn't be more different to this one!) and I felt great in it. It just goes to show that a little sartorial experimentation never hurt anyone! I was a bit worried about looking stumpy but a good pair of black tights helped to avoid that (I hope!) and I will definitely be wearing another variation of this outfit sometime soon, I have plenty of jazzy jumpers to try with it!

How do you get out of your comfort zone? Any tips on how to style up my DMs?

Cosy workwear...

When the weather is awful, all I want to do is curl up in a cosy jumper under a duvet but unfortunately I have to go to work! To make the gloomy days a little bit nicer, I have been pairing my jazziest jumpers with skirts for some fun but practical outfits. In the past week or so, I have worn lime green, neon pink and an owl print jumpers but I think this sequinned jumper is my favourite so far! I always seem to wear this skirt with a teal top, it's slightly more interesting than cream or red and I will never pass up on the opportunity to wear sequins! I bought this jumper as a cheap alternative to a Hobbs one and actually I prefer this one as it is much thinner but still really warm and cosy! I know some of you will be shocked at my choice of tights but luckily I get a lift to work and so these 15 deniers are the perfect match for a heated office. If I was outside though it would be a completely different story!

Jumper: Tu at Sainsbury's, top (not seen): Dorothy Perkins, skirt: Vero Moda via ASOS, shoes: ASDA
You can't really see it here but I even wore eyeliner/eye shadow! Since sorting through all of my make-up (god bless you Ikea trolley!) I have been able to see all the products I actually own. My skin has calmed down recently and I think this is mainly due to this Dr Jart + Platinum BB cream- expensive but oh so brilliant! I was so excited when I found this necklace in a bag recently, I thought I had lost it so I was really pleased to have it back, there's nothing better than rediscovering old favourites...

I have had a real thing for patterned bottoms recently, they are so easy to wear and way more interesting than my jeans which I have being trying to wean myself off, I have been wearing them far too much recently!

What's your favourite cosy outfit?

Jacquard trousers...

Looks wise, there's not much my Mum and I have in common, she is tall and slim and I am short and...not, which means there's not many clothes that suit both of us (much to my dismay as my Mum has the most amazing style and a shared fondness for Hobbs) Despite this, we occasionally pick up the same thing and are then massively excited when we see the other wearing it (the exciting lives we lead!) These trousers were a bargain in the M&S sale before Christmas and I fell in love with the subtly jazzy print and the fit- it's not often that my waist and hips are happy to share the same pair of trousers!

Cardigan: BHS via Mark's mum, top: Primark, belt: Primark, trousers: Marks & Spencer, shoes: Dorothy Perkins
I knew they would be perfect for work and they are, equally nice with both my omnipresent loafers and a pair of black heels (another rare attribute for trousers) I know there are more exciting ways to style these (just look at the lovely Miss Cohen for proof of that!) but sometimes keeping it simple makes it much easier to get out of the door in the morning! I never thought this top would become such a wardrobe staple but it is so comfy and skims over my stomach- winner!

Just look at how awesome the print is on these! You all know that I am quite the fan of bright colours and jazzy prints but I know not all of you are as keen, so a subtle print in a fairly sober colour is ideal if you are trying to ease yourself out of wearing all black outfits to work, February is grey enough already!

What have you been wearing to brighten up February?

Cobalt blue tweed dress...

This is a pretty simple outfit but I promised to share more of my work outfits and this is one of my most complimented, so I thought it was worth sharing! This beautiful cobalt blue dress was from Tesco (I told you they were good for work outfits!) and I picked it up in the sale. The material is a beautiful heavy bouclé tweed and although this makes the dress feel quite rigid, it is also deliciously warm and meant that I didn't have to wear a cardigan with it which I like - much less muss and fuss! I have to admit, I wasn't 100% convinced by the shape of this dress as it is quite loose around the waist but actually it makes it much more comfortable and the fact that I got a lot of compliments made me feel much happier ;) A few people commented that this dress looks quite vintage which I think is due to the low pockets and the slightly sixties shape. I can never usually find vintage to fit me so this is the perfect compromise!

Dress: Tesco, shoes: Clarks
A close up of that gorgeous tweedy material! I have really enjoyed wearing my hair up recently and this is my current favourite style - a ponytail tucked underneath into a mini beehive with a low side parting, which is again quite retro looking. I have pretty much perfected my liquid eyeliner technique now and I was particularly proud of this effort!

I have barely taken these wonderful Clarks loafers off my feet but when they are this comfortable, why would you?! Nude tights were perhaps slightly optimistic but I don't think this dress would suit black tights, perhaps I could try it with sheer spotty ones next time?

Any tips for finding 'proper' vintage workwear?

Red and leopard print...

As you may have seen from my excited Instagram post, I have just been promoted which I was very pleased about! Luckily my work is not particularly formal and I already have far too many clothes but I decided to use my Christmas vouchers to buy a few more work outfits so keep your eyes peeled for them in outfit posts! This is one of my favourite work outfits, I love the colour and shape of it and paired with these leopard print accessories, it is a pretty fun outfit too. I can't believe that I have never posted this dress up on the blog, I wear it all the time (although I have never worn it with its matching jacket) and it was a real bargain from Tesco - definitely the best place to buy pretty dresses!

Coat: Dannimac via Mum, dress: Tesco, belt: New Look, shoes: French Sole c/o Spartoo
It can be difficult to know what colours to pair with red but I really like it paired with this camel coat, it is much less harsh than black but looks really luxe especially paired with this leopard print belt...

Sleeveless shift dresses will always be my favourite thing to wear and this is such a lovely fit. I have a real thing for high necklines at the moment too, they always feel much more work-appropriate to me, even if my legs are on show!

These leopard print flats are one of my favourite pairs of shoes, they are just so jazzy - plus the red trim matches this dress perfectly; it's the little details that make a difference!
