Geometric print...

Being a blogger can be a funny old hobby- you spend hours taking and editing photos to go in a blog post, agonizing over the words to write with the images (or is that just me?!) whilst trying to keep up with emails, social media updates and comments… all in the few hours you have free in a week. Clearly, something has to give. Recently I have been feeling so out of the loop with blogging, I have barely been posting, thanks to another bout of flu and it all starts to feel a little overwhelming when you start trying to cross things off your ever-growing to-do list (don’t even get me started on sponsored/collaborative posts!) Instead of stressing out about this, I have been trying to remind myself why I blog (this post may be from 2011 but I think it is just as relevant today!) and trying to get back to basics and doing what I love the most; sharing the outfits that I love with all of you wonderful people who read my little blog!

Coat: Dannimac via Mum, top: Tesco,  tunic dress: Tesco, bodycon skirt: H&M, tights: Tesco, shoes: c/o Matalan, necklace: Accessorize.

It’s funny, these pictures were taken a few months ago (just look how long my hair is!) and I never posted them as I hated how I looked in them and I was convinced that I was hideous.  Yet when I look back at them now, I view them much more kindly. It is far too easy to compare yourself to other people, or berate yourself for not being the best at something but actually I think we all need to be a little kinder to ourselves. We wouldn't dream of being as critical of anyone else and yet we are all our own worst critics, why?  I don't know the answer to that but instead of beating myself up about everything I don't have or can't do, I want to celebrate all of the things I can.  Here you were thinking you were going to get a generic outfit post and instead you get a stream of consciousness from me ;)

I picked this tunic/dress up one evening when Mark and I were doing our weekly shop in Tesco as I really loved the geometric pattern and the unusual brown and black colour combination.  The print and colour scheme reminded me of 1970s prints and I had to resist my impulse to pair it with flared jeans and my gilet but since I last wore it, I have managed to shrink it and it is now in the long top, rather than dress category so it may be being paired with jeans sometime soon. It's a shame as I quite liked the longer length but it is really easy to layer and I hope I will love it just as much if I pair it with slim black trousers instead of a skirt  *fingers crossed*

It just goes to show how even just a few months can give you a fresh perspective on something. I have achieved so much even in the last year and I should at least try and remember this when I start to freak out about something! ;)

Any tips on staying calm?!

Crème caramel (or dressing like a Mad Men secretary)...

This dress was an impulse purchase a little while ago but I have only just got round to wearing it. I wore it on my last day at work before I was off for my birthday and felt like a 1960s secretary for the whole day (although thankfully without the institutionalised sexism!) I really like the camel/caramel colour with the cream- it felt like a really classic combination but the cut of the dress helps it to feel more modern. I look weirdly tanned in all of these pictures, I guess I chose the wrong shade of nude tights! ;)

Dress: ASOS, necklace: Miss Selfridge, shoes: Office
I have been trying to experiment more with my make up recently (you saw how much I love my new liquid eyeliner!) and I have been trying to wear more neutral make-up recently. I haven't quite mastered that 'no make-up, make-up' yet but once my skin clears up, I am hoping to wheel out my Nars Sheer Matte foundation again.

The best bit about this dress is how it looks like a skirt and a top. This more generous cut also allows for wriggle room when eating tons of birthday food (ahem). I love fitted dresses for work and it is so nice to have one that works better with flats than heels! I imagine this will be my go to dress for when I have meetings in London, you can't wear heels when running across the city!

However many tutorials I watch, I will never be able to master the art of a beehive but tumbling curls and some volume at the crown is my (much easier) version, no backcombing required here!

Do you know of any good YouTube hair tutorials?

A striped dress and the world's most neon jumper...

Gloomy days call for bright clothes and they don't get much brighter than this jumper! Another Monki bargain, it cost a mere £8 in their sale and it is the perfect 'inbetweeny' jumper, warm enough to keep you warm but not so thick that you boil to death (anyone else who thinks that their work has put on the central heating far too early?!) Before it arrived, I didn't realise  just how bright it was but this is one very loud, very neon jumper! Despite worrying that it might be a bit *much*, every time I have worn it, I have had so many compliments from pretty much everyone who has seen me in it. If you are feeling grey, this neon cherry red Trudy jumper is a mood-booster in knitted form...  Although I like bright colours, I never think of myself as liking neon clothes (too many uni flashbacks) but this was way more wearable than I expected . Because the colour is enough of a statement on its own, I opted for my favourite stripey dress and plain shoes to (try) and tone it down a bit.

Dress: Isabella Oliver (clothes swap), jumper: Monki, necklace: New Look, shoes: Office
I never used to like layering jumpers up with dresses but recently it has been my go-to when I'm not sure what to wear- all the fun of a skirt without having to find a top that matches! You all know how much I love Max Factor lipsticks and it seems I'm not the only one! This perfectly pinky coral is the 'Bewitching Coral' shade and the lovely Amy is also a fan (although it looks like a completely different colour on her!) Being matchy- matchy may not be cool but if this is wrong, I don't wanna be right!

This necklace was such a bargain and is one of the hardest working pieces of jewellery that I own. You can imagine my horror then when I couldn't find it to wear with this outfit! Luckily Mark saved the day and stopped me having a meltdown at 6.00 am which I am grateful for. A temper tantrum definitely starts your day on a bad note!

How do you make neon more wearable?

Making wedges wearable...

Whenever I am nervous about wearing a particular item of clothing, I pair it with old favourites in an effort to tone down whatever it is I am scared of. My Topshop wedges are a bit 'out there' and I wasn't sure how well they would go down at work but I figured that a Friday was the perfect day to try them out. I have worn them quite a few times since I bought them and they are really comfy, I think they will make perfect  dancing shoes! I can't see these black ones on the website but they have the grey and brown pairs which also look pretty nice...

This is pretty much this outfit with slightly snazzier shoes but it just goes to show, even fashion bloggers wear the same outfits repeatedly ;) I was lucky enough to visit the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery a couple of weeks ago with work (which is absolutely amazing by the way and well worth a visit!) and this necklace was a sneaky purchase from the gift shop. I love unusual jewellery and the Herbert has an amazing selection from local artists and I'm guessing most museums do. Much cheaper than Topshop and supporting local craftspeople, what more could you ask for?!

I told you these were jazzy!  I love the gold buckles and the wedge is just high enough to make my legs look longer without causing me to topple forward a very real possibility when you are as clumsy as I am!

How do you wear things that are out of your comfort zone?

Victoriana mark II

There's something about lace dresses that I just can't resist. This is completely different to my beloved lace dress from Monki but with the high neckline, they both have a hint of Victoriana about them which I love. I just realised that this dress is basically a day time appropriate version of my favourite festive frock which seems fitting as they were both from Miss Sefridge. I clearly gravitate towards similar clothes without even realising! I picked up this dress when I was shopping with a friend. Naomi made me promise that if it didn't fit or if I ever got bored of it, that I would pass it on to her but unfortunately for her, I can't see this leaving my wardrobe any time soon!

Dress: Miss Selfridge, tights: Tesco, shoes: New Look
There's something about a high lacy neckline that gets me every time, I guess I can't resist the peekaboo nature! Without it, this dress would be far too plain for me but it jazzes it up enough that I don't have to think about jewellery or a belt. This is always particularly useful if when I am running late in the morning (read, always!)

I have said before that I'm not a fan of a dipped hem but if a dress is pretty enough then I don't mind it too much, there just has to be enough length at the front. Luckily, unlike a lot of Miss Selfridge dresses and skirts, this isn't too short and I would even feel comfortable enough to wear it with nude tights...

Twisted curls and the pretty cut out back...

Do you like dipped hems? What styles do you gravitate towards?

Monochrome floral dress...

Wearing only black and white has never really been my thing, I prefer bright colours to black and white and monochrome has always felt just a bit too safe for me. There are some notable exceptions to this rule, I loved this spotty top from Next and this maxi skirt and blouse combination is perfect for the summer but generally I steer clear of the (black and) white stuff. I really shouldn't have bought this dress from Primark, I try not to buy clothes that won't last more than a few washes but I loved the fit of this and the length makes it perfect for work.

Dress: Primark, belt: Primark, shoes: French Sole c/o Spartoo
A slick of eyeliner and a mini beehive worked perfectly with the high neckline. I have been having a bit of trouble with my skin recently but it seems to have cleared up. It's amazing how much it can dent your confidence when your skin is less than perfect so I am glad it is looking fresher. The last thing I want to be doing is wearing a full face of make-up in the warmer weather!

My Office loafers are probably the most worn shoes in my wardrobe and it is starting to show. The inside is completely ruined so I have been looking for a pair of patent flats to replace them. You know how much I love my leopard print French Sole flats and when I saw this patent pair I thought they would make a worthy replacement. They don't fit as well as my other French Sole pair but I'm hoping that the leather will soften as I wear them.

Do you have any tips for keeping your skin clear?

P.S. This post was done in collaboration with Spartoo

The perfect cosy Friday outfit...

Not the most inspiring of post titles, I admit but it is difficult to describe this outfit in any other way! Last Friday I trekked down to London for the BBC WDYTYA show as my company was running a stall there and we were taking it in turns to help man it. This was the first time I had ever been to a trade show or anything like this and I didn't have the foggiest idea about what to wear. In the end I went for cosiness and a smarter version of my usual Friday outfit of jeans and slobby jumper.  I figured comfort was key when spending the whole day on your feet or travelling! I wish I had worn a proper coat rather than my jacket though as it was freezing, even on the Underground, and I was turning a fetching shade of blue...

Jacket: La Redoute via charity shop, jumper: Tesco, shirt: Monki, trousers: Monki, shoes: Office, awkward pose: model's own.
As I left an hour later than normal for work it was just starting to get light so I was able to snap some photos outside which was super exciting. I much prefer photos taken outside, I think the light is so much nicer! This jumper is my favourite cosy layer at the moment, it is such a nice bright colour and unlike some of my super chunky knits, I don't boil in it as soon as I go inside. I only wish I hadn't paid full price for it as it is now in the sale :( If you do buy it, which I totally recommend that you do, size down at least one size as it is pretty big otherwise.

You can just about see my favourite patterned blouse poking out too - this Carrie blouse was an impulse buy from Monki a while ago, which is perfect for adding a splash of colour to a work outfit. I really love the print on it; it has everything from moustaches to the letter 'M' (always a winner for me!) Another well-loved part of my Monki collection! Is it wrong that I want the blue polka dot print too?!

What are your favourite cosy outfits? How do you add colour to a work outfit?

Red, white and grey...

And now for something completely different... After the riot of colour in my last post on workwear, this could seem positively drab in comparison, but interesting details ensure that this outfit is (hopefully!) more fab and also something that more people could wear in their office.  I knew this cardigan would be a wardrobe staple when I bought it and these grey wool trousers are my favourite ones to wear when it is chilly outside...

Cardigan: ASOS, top: Wallis via charity shop, trousers: NW3 from Hobbs, shoes: Marks  & Spencer, necklace: New Look
This top is one of those that I can only wear with certain items of clothing as it is so short in the body. I like the fact that it is slightly different to your average monochrome striped top and the red adds enough interest to lift an all grey outfit. Paired with this rather summery necklace I felt a lot more cheerful at work!

Now I know 'kitten heels' are dreadfully uncool so if I call them midi heels instead, will I get the approval of the 'fash pack'?! I picked these up just after Christmas in the M&S sale and I absolutely love them. Red patent shoes will always meet with my approval and the bow on the front is just a bonus!

What helps to brighten your day at work?

Making mini skirts work...

These photos were taken way back at the beginning of October, before I picked up my glasses but I don't know why I haven't posted it yet as this is an outfit I wear pretty regularly despite both the shoes and the skirt being impulse buys. I have to admit, I am awful for making impulse purchases, (especially if I happen to wonder into a supermarket clothing section) and this skirt definitely falls into that category. I saw it on ASOS for a measly £9.50 and figured that even if it did look a bit yellow, with change from a tenner, I couldn't really complain. Luckily, when the skirt arrived, it was gorgeous- the colour is more camel than yellow and the check print is lovely- I never can resist a checked skirt

Coat: Dannimac via my mum, faux fur stole: H&M, blouse: Urban Outfitters, skirt: Vero Moda via ASOS, tights: ASDA, shoes: NW3 by Hobbs
As soon as it arrived, I knew I wanted to pair it with this teal blouse, it seems to go with everything and although sheer, with a camisole top underneath, it is more than work appropriate. I think the trick with mini skirts, is to ensure that you wear a top with sleeves with them, as this makes the shorter length a lot less obvious, even if the sleeves are sheer

A slick of red lipstick and my faux fur stole always make me feel glamourous, even when heading to work, definitely the perfect sartorial pick me up...

Yes, my legs really are that short! Cable knit tights are a winter essential for me and these match these NW3 heels nearly perfectly. These heels hopefully elongate my stumpy legs too, despite the length of my skirt...

What was your last impulse purchase? How do you make short skirts more wearable?
