Edinburgh: the sights... (VERY PICTURE HEAVY)...

Edinburgh is one of my favourite places in the world and I was super psyched to show Mark around. In total we spent 2 whole days (plus an afternoon and a morning) and 3 evenings in the Scottish capital and enjoyed every minute. We took far too many photos and found it really difficult to narrow it down so I have just shared my favourites here. Apologies for the Insta-spam over the last week too, I got more than a little snap happy! ;)  I was pretty impressed with how much we managed to fit into our few short days here but there was plenty more we would have liked to have seen, I guess we will just have to book another trip! Many thanks to everyone who shared their recommendations for things to do and eat/drink, I will be sharing some of my favourite foodie places we tried over the next few days too if you are interested?

The castle may be a bit of a tourist cliche but it is pretty darn spectacular, especially in the sunshine!

This pretty little model helped us to find our way around Edinburgh, Mark especially loved the castle on it!

You all know how much I love the National Gallery, it is one of my favourite places to wander around and I loved the Titian paintings!

Pretty views back up the hill...

These houses looked like they were going to fall off the side of the hill, I don't know how they managed to stay put.

One of many cashmere and kilt shops on the Royal Mile and the Storytelling Cafe at John Knox House...

We stayed in a Travelodge (my favourite) that was on St Mary's Street, just off the Royal Mile and it was ace, really good location and great hotel too, clean, comfy and (fairly) cheap, what more could you ask for?!

You can't go to Edinburgh without visiting the castle! Mark and I went up around 11.00 o'clock and it was so busy! Unfortunately we were visiting on half term week so there were lots of overexcited children everywhere too, never good in my books!

It was a really misty day but the views were still pretty spectacular!

Obligatory staring down cannon shot...

The One o' clock gun, fired every day at (you guessed it!) 1.00 pm to mark the time for ships on the Leith

Coat: c/o Seasalt, top: Oasis, necklace: New Look, jeans: Topshop, socks: Tesco, shoes: Keds c/o Spartoo
I was trying so hard not to fall off this, cannons are pretty darned slippy, especially after rain!

Mark being a bit rude...

Cemetery for Soldiers; Dogs :(

Mons Meg who I was convinced was called Big Bessie (don't ask me why!)

Pretty stained glass in the teeny tiny St Margaret's Chapel...

The Great Hall was pretty insane, there was armour everywhere!

We even got to hold a sword! :O

I love me some beautiful stained glass!

Isn't he cute?!

I really like wandering around graveyards (they are so peaceful) and St Cuthbert's was just insane, lots of huge broken headstones and blackened memorials...

Cute lions adorning the bannisters!

We stumbled across the Writer's Museum by accident (it's near the Museum on the Mound FYI) but it was super interesting, I didn't realise how much Robert Louis Stevenson had travelled!

St Giles's Cathedral was also awesome, very pretty inside and filled with interesting plaques like this

Canongate Kirkyard and us stepping out with Robert Fergusson...

The Parliament building is pretty insane, just look at the view they have outside their front door!

We didn't go into the Palace of  Holyrood House but just lurked around outside, isn't it pretty though?

The gates and grounds were pretty snazzy too...

You can't beat some silly photos- the majority of the ones we took are one or both of us goofing around and these were no exception, pretending we lived at the palace... (you'd never know that were were adults!)

I really wish we could have spent more time here but we did really enjoy Edinburgh, I guess we will just have to visit again soon!

I've never been to Scotland but I've been to the other side of the world, it's insane! Love your photos and this looks like the kind of trip I would adore xx

Aaah this brings back so many lovely memories! It looks like you had a brilliant time- when I went last year it was freezing so it's lovely to see the sun shining!

Aw looks like you had such a lovely trip, always love reading posts about Edinburgh! It's been years since I last had a proper wander round the castle, think I'll need to go back again soon. x

I would love to go to Edinburgh, but living on the South coast it's just so far away! It's definitely on my wishlist though! Great photos :) x

Looks like you had an ace time - I chuckled at that picture with Mark and the canon... I've only been to Edinburgh once and only for a few hours so we didn't get far beyond the Royal Mile and taking in a Festival performance. I'd love to go back again one day though and do the castle and Arthur's Seat.

I really need to head over there for a trip. I've heard it's such an incredible city - and I do love the Scottish accent.

Ooooh I want to go to Edinburgh so much! It's on my to-visit list so I'm noting all of these things down, you can't beat a castle, especially if it's National Trust :) <3 Claire @ Jazzpad

heh heh. I actually don't like Edinburgh, I am such a traitor. I am Glasgow Loyal, but my boyfriend starts his grad job down in Edinburgh in September so I will be there a lot more. I have never actually seen much of Edinburgh other than for shopping. I'll have to check out the places you recommended that I haven't been too. Maybe I can fall in love with Edinburgh again. Hope you managed to avoid the trams!

I'm one of those people who's been to Edinburgh about 12 times and *still* has never visited to castle. The majority of the times I've been though, have been during the Festival so you can't really get near the castle anyway!

Next time you are in Edin you must visit the Holyrood House :)

I am definitely Edinburgh fan, although I like Glasgow as well (never visited it though, just passing by... shame on me!).

In Edinburgh, I remember I had a great meal at this place http://www.thepottingshededinburgh.co.uk/ (perhaps someone would like to try it!).

I went to Edinburgh several times and on 3 occasions I ended up booking a room at http://www.hotelsclick.com/hotels/United_Kingdom/Edinburgh/2602/Hotel-Crowne_Plaza_Edinburgh_Royal_Terrace.html: it is no doubt a bit expensive, but for me one of the best hotels in the city. Staff was delicious :)
