Camel+ tobacco.... a Clarks inspired outfit post...

I think sometimes it is all too easy to get caught up in the pretentiousness of fashion and forget that at the end of the day, getting dressed is supposed to be fun. When I bought this dress I wasn't sure what colours to pair it with but this Clarks advert provided me with all the inspiration I could want. Prepare yourself for some very silly photos!

I unfortunately don't have a cute dog to cuddle so I had to make do with a cuddly toy dog from when I was a baby! :P


My colour scheme was slightly different but this advert provided me with the inspiration I needed for styling this up...

This coat is so so cosy and perfect for the Autumn chill and adds an edge of sophistication to all of my outfits, you can see why a classic camel coat is a wardrobe classic!

I honestly cannot praise these boots enough- they are possibly the most comfortable shoes in my wardrobe and the perfect colour to go with pretty much all of my Autumn outfits...I love it when a plan comes together! 


I have only just noticed the piece of fluff on my dress in these pictures, how annoying! I have been wearing this leopard print belt with everything recently, it has been the perfect accompaniment to all of the rich colours I have been wearing.


I really loved taking these photos and I hope you find them a bit more interesting than my usual outfit posts :)

New Look A/W press day (PICTURE HEAVY)

Last week I went to my very first press day to see the New Look A/W 2011 collection and I have to say now choosing photos for this post was extremely difficult. I saw some really lovely things and I am pretty sure that all of my money will be going into the pockets of New Look. 

This was in the kid's section but I'm sure I could squeeze into it...right? 


























The building was absolutely gorgeous and showed off the clothes perfectly. There was a gorgeous mix of jewel colours, embellishment and prints. The accessories were lovely, especially all of the different ol prints. The styling of the pieces was spot on and really showed off the pieces to their full potential.

Press pass? Yes please!

As you may already be aware, Danni and I went to the Clothes Show in Birmingham on Wednesday and it was our first event where we had press passes and our excitement was palpable. We managed to navigate our way to the press lounge (!) and helped ourselves to the complimentary tea and biscuits... This was a bit of a change from last year's event when we both went...on separate days and ended up buying the same nail varnish... I get great minds think alike?! :P


After refuelling and grabbing our press passes, we were escorted to the 'press pit' with our cameras- shamefully, mine was only a teeny tiny Panasonic one and I felt very inferior next to the pros. Nevertheless, we were super excited for the show to begin. Most of the photos are Danni's as mine came out absolutely rubbish...time to invest in a better camera?




Exciting times! The theme for this years dance show was 'A night at the movies' and they didn't disappoint with male and female models dazzling in a variety of (themed) outfits.

My favourite part of the event though was the gorgeous George Lamb- SWOON. Does anyone else find him totally attractive? I don't know whether it's the height and/or his dapper sense of style but man he is YUM ;)

I must admit, I was completely in awe of the models and dancers, especially considering their gruelling schedule. I think they perform up to 10 times a day! They also had the art of walking in heels mastered... something I desperately need to practice! Anyone who has ever seen me in heels will readily acknowledge that I am like Bambi on ice... I think I will be sticking to my block heels and sparkly flats over Christmas :) 





I especially loved their take on fairytale glamour and the dress on the left in the last picture is very Alexander McQueen non? I love the muted colours and the unexpected burst of colour with the shoes- my love of purple is well documented so this comes as no real surprise! I found all of the themes inspiring though and I will definitely be trying to shake up my wardrobe a little and avoid getting stuck into a rut... 




When they announced that there was a high school theme, I literally squealed (yes, I'm that cool) and proceeded to swoon at the hunky basketball players, cute nerds and the long swishy legs hair of the female models. 






The show was indeed fabulous. I seriously can't fathom how those dancers do that five or six times A DAY. It's ridiculous. I mean, look at them!


It was weird to be in the press pit. I kind of felt like a bit of a cheat, I mean we're by no means a big blog, and we're certainly not journalists, but the opportunity was absolutely amazing and I'm so grateful they gave us passes - I wasn't expecting it at all.

I couldn't believe how moody the model on the left was- if I had legs up to my armpits, I'd be grinning from ear to ear!  

oh, and some antler adorned Deer-man. Naturally.


The show, as always was incredible. But I've gotta say that I think the novelty of the exhibition itself has worn off a little for me [SACRILEGE!]. I know I know, fashion bloggers should love a room the size of a small country filled to the brim with clothes, but honestly the only part I was interested in was the vintage section. And sadly I was a bit too poor to buy anything [and even if I'd had the money I would've definitely left poor as it was all incredible stuff].



The rest of the clothes stalls were a bit...meh. Although they did have an adorable new section devoted to all things knitted, sewn and crafted so it's awesome that they're mixing it up a little bit.

The make-up area is definitely the place to head if you ever plan on going. There's bargain after bargain after bargain, and Wednesday is the best day for deals as they're all trying to get rid of stock! 
So basically, some top tips if you're going to brave The Clothes Show next year...
  1. Go with money
  2. Don't spend said money on something you wouldn't ordinarily buy
  3. Expect a lot of stalls to sell the same stuff
  4. Don't go on a make-up haul the week beforehand; you'll find some fab deals there
  5. Go on the last day if you can!
I think one thing we can both agree on though, is the fact that this blog has taken us to some brilliant places and we have met some amazing people through it.... yes I am getting super soppy, but it's Christmas! :P If there is anything you particularly like or dislike about Frills 'n' Spills or you have any ideas for things you would like us to feature (more outfit posts for instance) then let us know :)

We're late, we're late, for a very important date!



After getting completely over excited over just the trailer, we were extra happy when Alice in Wonderland was finally released in cinemas. Our excitement however, didn't correlate with organisation in the slightest and so, nearly two weeks after its release we eventually managed to organise a cinema trip, donning our cutest Alice-inspired charms and of course, 3D glasses...attractive.


I'm not going to lie; the 3D glasses did make me feel super-cool and my excitement at the prospect of keeping them after the film was just too much to contain. Naturally, they've remained on my desk in the same spot since Monday and are completely useless. Still, they are MINE!

Anyway, back to the film. Personally I really enjoyed it - Burton's trippy style was the perfect compliment to Lewis Caroll's equally zany story (although the film doesn't actually follow the original tale) and the actors were selected really well. I especially loved Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat - his voice just made the character seem even mellower... as if having the ability to float around aimlessly wasn't breezy enough.


Although Tim Burton's known for his ultra-wacky approach, and in spite of the fact that the film was undeniably weird (yet wonderful) one of my favourite aspects was the slightly exaggurated features that were juuust enough to make the characters look dreamlike, but not enough to be OTT. Cheshire's slightly creepy and extra toothy smile for example, or Hatter's somewhat enlarged and off-centre eyes.


Speaking of the Depp, you could definitely see aspects of his previous characters coming through... Captain Jack Sparrow's infamous run was definitely in there : P

Storyline aside, the only negative aspect for me was the 3D gimmick. I just don't think I've quite come round to the idea of it. I don't really think it added to the story here, although maybe I wouldn't be saying that if I'd seen it in good old 2D as well.

Overall verdict? It's definitely a watcher. I'd advise anyone to see it, and although it's definitely not the best film I've seen, it's certainly one of the most unique. And hey- if you end up not liking it, at least you can leave in the knowledge that, should a suitable use come to mind, you have a pair of very fetching (if slightly expensive) 3D glasses to hand.



I really enjoyed the story and the characters were very well cast. I thought Helena Bonham Carter was brilliant as the slightly unhinged Red Queen. 
The 3D effect added depth to the surreal atmosphere of 'Wonderland' but apart from that I felt it was slightly gratuitous and just ended up hurting my eyes! I really enjoyed the film and Mia Wasikowska played Alice to perfection with gorgeous outfits throughout... my personal favourite was the outfit she wore as "Um from Umbridge" in the Red Queen's court. It was very Vivienne Westwood-esque but I can't find any photos online... :( I did thoroughly enjoy it though and I recommend 3D glasses to anyone wanting to make an impact in lectures or at work (!)
