Interesting workwear for a smart office...

Since starting my new job, I have had to get back into the habit of wearing smarter clothes for work. Whilst I miss my more casual workwear, it has been good to challenge myself and push out of my (very literal) comfort zone. Life's too short to wear boring clothes so I have been wearing a lot of fun printed dresses (this geometric number and this blocky beauty were particular favourites) to make it a but more interesting. I have been lucky enough to find a few dresses in my favourite charity shop to add to my collection, including this beautiful printed one from Hobbs. The shape isn't one I would usually go for but the drawstring waist was able to cinch me in and it is so light to wear, making it perfect for the summer!

I love the slash neck on this and the print is really unusual, does anyone else think it looks like rain? I have been trying to be more inventive with how I style my hair and I was pretty pleased with this sleeker look, thank goodness for my GHDs!

I wear these Whistles shoes a lot and I am cautious abut wearing them out as they are just so darned comfy! Has anyone seen any interesting black blocky heels recently? I need to find an alternative to these but ideally with a pointed toe too... let me know if you have more luck than I do!

What do you wear to work? Where do you buy interesting workwear from?

LEGO WALL-E...

Wall-E Lego toy, fun, building, Lego

Although both Mark and I are massive fans of Lego, according to the blog, I have never actually posted about it. We usually get a few bits and pieces for Christmas and birthdays but when we saw this amazing Wall-E set on the Lego Ideas site, I fell in love and bought it as soon as we saw it. The set was designed by Pixar animator Angus MacLane and it is such a detailed set. Although it's not cheap at £40, that is very reasonable for a Lego set of this size and complexity (especially when you use your Clubcard vouchers to buy it, haha! I have been a fan of Wall-E since the film was released in 2008 and it is a fitting addition to my collection of memorabilia. When we picked it up in Tesco, they aksed us if it was a present and we said yes, we just didn't mention that it was a gift for us! ;)

It all came packed in a sturdy cardboard box which we tipped all of the Lego into once we opened all of the packets...

...and there was a lot of it!

In total, there were 178 stages in the build and it took a couple of hours to assemble on Monday night. I started it with Mark but I was falling asleep by 10 o' clock so Mark finished it off for me. I am so rock 'n' roll!

The level of detail  on this is just astounding and thanks to some clever pieces, he is fully poseable. I love the fact that his tummy opens too, you could actually fit the plant inside. Yes, I am a complete child but I love how much personality this little critter has.

I mean, who wouldn't love this cute little face?!

Tips for starting a new job...

As you may have seen (!) I have just started a new job and although it has been a bit of a whirlwind so far, I thought sharing some hints and tips might be useful to anyone starting somewhere new. I was at my last job for 3 years so it has been a while since I was a newbie and I was in a right tizz last Monday! I thought I would share my tips for starting a new job and my thought processes for them. Please bear in mind that this is only my experience and one working in a fairly smart office so please be led by your company's guidelines!

Left- dress: Oasis, shoes: Marks & Spencer, middle- top: Warehouse, trousers: ASOS, shoes: French Sole c/o Spartoo, right- dress: Sainsbury's, shoes: c/o Tesco

* Wear an old favourite on your first day- you need to look professional but feeling comfortable is so important! Originally I was going to wear trousers but I always feel more comfortable in a dress so I went for a navy Tesco dress (which sadly I didn't manage to get pictures of). I am contradicting myself slightly here as I only bought this dress in the charity shop a few weeks ago but both the colour and shape felt classic Maria so it was hardly out of my comfort zone! So far I have worn my smarter dresses and trousers with blouses rather than t-shirts and have only had positive feedback which is good!

* Be led by your colleagues on dress code- this will save any embarrassment, for example I found out on day one that jeans were a big no no (except on dress down Fridays) so I had to mentally revise some planned outfits as a result. I did find out that brightly coloured hair was OK though so that gave me some food for thought ;) This also means that you won't go out and spend unnecessary money on clothes that won't be suitable, whilst giving you an excuse to buy 'stuff for work'!

* Neutral make-up is key for your first few days. I am a massive fan of bright lipsticks but my first day was probably not the time to be worrying about whether it needs reapplying or if I have smudged it. I went for soft peachy lipstick and kept the rest pretty simple. You want people to remember your face, not just your make-up! Now I am in week 2 I feel a lot more comfortable and I am back to my usual colourful self!

* Wear comfy shoes- you will be introduced to a lot of people and probably shown round the office. I have done a lot of walking this week so have been wearing flat shoes to save my poor battered feet. It is only a mile or so each way but I may have to become one of those people who wears trainers to walk in and just change my shoes at work instead...

* Get a floor plan- this is really helpful when trying to learn people's names and also means you don't have to wander around awkwardly trying to find the toilets...

* Take plasters, paracetamol etc. but don't overpack your bag- I am very accident prone so being prepared is key but there is nothing worse than having to heft a huge bag around, especially on an unfamiliar commute!

* Take in a water bottle- this at least means you can stay hydrated until you know what the situation is on tea and coffee. There's nothing worse than having a dry scratchy throat, especially as you will be doing a lot of talking.

* Food- luckily my diabetes means I have an excuse for carting around so much food (ahem) but I can guarantee that you will be absolutely starving. Nerves and adrenaline are a lethal combination and if you're anything like me, you will be ravenous by 10 o' clock so making sure you have a bag filled with food is always a good idea...

* Take a notebook and a pen in with you- I took the one which I had used for interview prep and was able to refamiliarize myself with all the notes I had made previously, whilst waiting for people to arrive etc. It gave me something to focus on and I felt slightly less out of my depth as a result.

* Bring something to do- Until you know what the deal is with your training schedule and lunch tomes, it is probably best to not go wandering off at lunchtime. I normally have a book or something to do in my bag and so far I have read The Talented Mr Ripley in my lunch break and have nearly finished The Secret History so far. I never seem to get much reading done at home so my desk is an ideal spot to catch up on my 'to read' list...

* Chewing gum- this is pretty self explanatory but I am always super paranoid about my breath, especially if I am meeting lots of new people.

*Take up opportunities to make friends- I am super shy when I meet new people and being the newbie is always hard, especially when you are moving into a close knit team but I have found that gestures like going out for lunch or offering to make tea or coffee will go a long way towards endearing you to your new colleagues. Obviously you are all lovely people but it doesn't hurt to remind people of this! ;)

* Ask lots of questions- you may feel awkward about it but it is better than going wrong and having to explain that to your new boss or team. They will want to help you and you can get away with pestering people a lot more easily in the first few weeks!

* Write everything down: I am a keen note-taker anyway but your induction means taking in a lot of information and having things written down makes it a lot easier to go back over them when you have time.

* Don't be afraid to push for training or to be included in meetings- when you are new, people can forget to include you in an an email or add your name to a list. I gave found that being perky and inviting myself along to things I think are relevant or helpful for my job has been really useful and things have slotted into place a lot quicker.Being pushy can be hard but it saves scrabbling to catch up later!

* Give yourself time to get used to the change- moving jobs is a big deal and you will probably be massively overtired and emotional for your first few weeks. Make sure you take care of yourself and don't beat yourself up if you haven't got your routine settled yet. I am not ashamed to say that ready meals and chippy runs have kept me going this past fortnight along with long showers and plenty of early nights...

* Sort out your routine- I am someone who thrives on structure in their life so finding a new morning routine has been important, if a little tricky. I found that the easiest way to do it was work out how long it would take me to get to work, and then work backwards to see how long I needed to get ready in the morning. It's not quite set in stone yet, but I'm getting there!

Hopefully this is slightly helpful for people, please do let me know if you have any other questions and I will do my best to answer them!

An elegant Easter outfit...

This gorgeous white dress was another one from the wardrobe of the lovely Alice and it is absolutely beautiful. I have been waiting to wear it as it is definitely an 'occasion' dress and although I imagine it would be lovely for a christening, no-one I know has had a baby so the big Easter meal with my family was the perfect opportunity to give it a whirl. I will take any excuse to get all dressed up and I know that this dress will become a staple for family occasions where I need to look sophisticated. I felt really elegant in this outfit and had a massive grin on my face all day- it's amazing what a gorgeous dress can do for your confidence and mood! I was originally going to curl my hair but I actually think that the straighter hair helps it look a little more modern, especially paired with a pinned back fringe. I went for my favourite red lipstick, Max Factor Colour Elixir Lipstick in Ruby Tuesday to jazz it up and it did the job nicely!

Dress: Marks & Spencer c/o Alice, shoes: Marks & Spencer
You can see just how gorgeous the heavy crochet lace is here and the black grosgrain ribbon too. I was a little bit nervous about how fitted this dress was but I think it looks OK, what do you think? I know I keep raving about Essie 'Aperitif' but it is just such a good classic red! I need to get some more Essie polishes- which shades should I try next?

This skirt is a little bit longer than I would usually feel comfortable in but I think that is what makes it look pulled together- maybe I just need to rethink what hemlines I can actually pull off? Paired with the comfiest mid heeled shoes I own, I think this almost-midi-length looks pretty darned good!

Which Essie shade should I try next? Do you get all dressed up for Easter?

Black cherry...

From one Christmas outfit to another! This was the outfit I wore for our third (!) day of Christmas festivities which we spent with Mark's family and I was really pleased with how it turned out. I spotted this French Connection dress in the ASOS sale (are you spotting a pattern here?!) and stashed it away to wear for either Christmas or New Year. This felt like a very sophisticated look for me, I think 2014 was the year that I first felt like a grown up and my wardrobe is finally starting to follow suit. You wouldn't imagine that a bodycon lace dress would be all that comfortable but actually the jersey is so soft and stretchy, you forget that the dress is squeezing you in, in all the right places ;) Although I wore this on Boxing Day, I imagine this dress could be be pulled out for nearly any party or whenever I want to feel sassy, it is definitely another one of my favourite things that I bought this year!

Dress: French Connection, shoes: New Look, bracelet: L K Bennett (gift from my parents)
Although I'm more than happy to wear bright lipstick, I am wary of darker berry and purple colours as I worry that I look a bit too much like I am playing at dress up rather than looking sophisticated (a long term problem of mine!). This lipstick is a Max Factor one and although the name has rubbed off, I think it is this shade and I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to wear. Maybe I need to brave my Revlon 'Black Cherry' lipstick next?

I'm not normally very good with sleeves but these ones are super light and fairly delicate (I was so paranoid about ripping them!) and Mark's parents house is fairly cold so I was able to get away with them. You can also (almost) see the beautiful L K Bennett charm bracelet I got from my parents too - it is absolutely beautiful and I am very lucky girl indeed! The draping at the waist is pretty unusual but it draws the eye to my waist rather than my hips which can only be a good thing!

These shoes from New Look are probably one of the cheapest pairs in my wardrobe but they are very comfy and the nude shade is super flattering, even on my pasty legs! They were worn to nearly all the weddings I went to this year and I love them so much that I have even bought a backup pair for when these ones completely fall apart!

How did your style change in 2014?

The perfect going out dress...

Going out is always a tricky thing, I love going out and dancing till my legs are sore but staying up late has always been a problem for me (I am tucked up in bed by half nine most nights!) Recently though I have been to a couple of shindigs (showing my age there!) and this dress is usually the first option on my list. I'm never 100% comfortable in anything too revealing but at the same time I am always far too warm so this sleeveless drapey dress from Whistles is the perfect compromise, It's fitted but not too bodycon and is long enough that I can wave my arms around with wild abandon when dancing without any fear of flashing! The colour is ace, described as airforce grey, it is actually a gunmetal blue (is that even a thing?!) and is a colour that seems to suit everyone. I love the fact that it is equally at home whether it is being worn to a pub, a house party or even a club- this dress truly is something special!

Dress: Whistles, necklace: French Connection, shoes: Marks & Spencer
Luckily it doesn't need much accessorising (if any) and this simple geometric necklace is subtle enough to add interest without being overpowering. My hair had a lot of volume the evening I wore this so rather than trying to fight it, I went with the flow and ended up with some pretty eighties inspired make-up too.  I paired some bronze, gold and navy eyeshadow with my Soap and Glory Solar Power bronzer which I have a love hate relationship with. It looks fairly natural on my pale skin in real life but photographs really badly which is not cool... Paired with my Revlon lip butter in 'Peach Parfait', I was ready to roll. I love a strong lipstick for the evening but it always seems to wear off pretty quickly and I am in no fit state to reapply it precisely so I tend to go for strong eyes instead- the more lived in they look, the better, I think!

I can't be dealing with walking for miles in high heels and as I was going from a house party, into town, I plumped for this M&S pair instead. Again, nothing ground-breaking but still fun to wear (and really comfy too!) You can get a better look at the nipped in waistline and pockets (!!) here too, they are only minor details but make a world of difference to the fit of the dress. I know I am gushing but Whistles really can do no wrong in my eyes recently, especially when they are making such beautiful dresses!

What's your failsafe outfit for a night out?

Counting your blessings...

Life has been more than a little hectic recently and I have been constantly complaining for the past few weeks (poor Mark!). Rather than staying grumpy, I have been trying to appreciate the things I do have rather than the things I don't and actually I have a hell of a lot to be grateful for. I thought it would be nice to share some of the things that have been making me smile, the little things make a hell of a difference! Apologies for the Instagram photos, I don't usually post them on the blog but sometimes your SLR is too much of a faff! #firstworldproblems

Peonies are my favourite flowers and these have been brightening up the flat for a while now and smell absolutely gorgeous!

Pretty cross stitch tea-towels to help to make washing and drying up slightly more enjoyable...

Gin + tonic + elderflower= perfection. Now I just need to work out how to make my own version in much larger quantities...

Carrot cake and iced peach lemonade are the best way to celebrate the end of the working week, Costa really is dangerous!

A little friend who we got for buying the paper when we visited Manchester. Mark and I would both love a dog but Betty will have to do until then...

I know every blogger and their dog has this bedding but it is just so pretty! I have always been a big fan of ASDA bedding, I don't know what it is about their duvets but they are just so darn comfy!

It is so nice to spend the weekends catching up with friends- this picture was taken on a lazy day spent in various pub gardens by the river. Although I may complain about the rural location where we live, views like this make it all worth while...

I know my new shoes won't be to everyone's taste but I absolutely love them! I have never been particularly cool (understatement of the century) but these Topshop wedges make me feel like I can conquer the world and they have been the perfect boost to my confidence (or lack thereof ) recently.

What are you grateful for? Share your smiles with me below!

It's the most wonderful time of the year...(PICTURE HEAVY)

This was mine and Mark's first Christmas living together and it was really lovely to spend some time with each other and our friends and family. We had a lot of food and drink and some really lovely presents and I feel very very lucky...

This crystal star ornament c/o The White Company has been making us feel very Christmassy and looks lovely on the top of the tree with the lights. I can't find it on the website but I imagine that you can still get it instore...
♥ Homemade cinnamon swirls (recipe here) were the perfect breakfast and they lasted for a few days which meant I could have them on all 3 days of Christmas ;)
♥ Eaten with a mug of strong coffee...
♥ ... and some freshly squeezed orange juice...
♥ Me looking very pleased with some of my presents from Mark, despite having no room left on my bookshelf, I will always love getting new books!
♥ Trashy DVDs will also always be welcome!
♥ Lovely presents from our friends...
♥ On Christmas Eve Mark and I cooked a roast beef dinner which was absolutely yummy!
♥ Yes I know, another blogger cliche! I love a good scented candle and this one c/o The White Company has been making the house smell gorgeous - it's a heady mix of cinnamon, clove and orange...

What has made Christmas special for you this year?

Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree...

Yes I know, I know it is only 4th December and far too early for putting up your Christmas tree but I have been feeling really festive since we hit December this year (personally I think it is because I am not forced to be cheery as I am not working at a supermarket for the first time since 2006) and after I bought some extra decorations for our first Christmas in the flat at the weekend, it seemed only right to put up our tree as early as possible, sorry not sorry...

The decorations are a mix of cute wooden decorations from parents and garish shiny baubles from Primark...

Mark and I said that we would slowly amass decorations of our own and we thought this was a fitting start to out collection. My favourite decoration has to be this wooden heart decoration, carved from the finest English oak, which we bought at Ludlow medieval fair a few weekends ago...

...or this cute little gingerbread man from Wilkinsons, I can't decide!

And just because everyone loves a gif, right?

When do you put up your Christmas tree? Are you in the festive spirit yet?
