It's a liquorice life...

Hi, My name is Chloe. I like to talk and hence you can usually find me over at Chloe Likes To Talk. I'm a 22 year old coffee freak, food loving, sweetie muching, matryoshka obsessed, fashion junkie languages graduate with a tendency to over use Spanish terms of endearment. I like to think and dream big, even if I can't always work the little things out and my aspirations change at least weekly. Words to live by: One swallow does not a summer make.

A lot of things in this life provoke extremes. Me, personally I love liquorice, and Marmite, and Diet Coke instead of standard. I’m probably a bit of an extreme person- people either like me or they really don’t, I have to do something properly and in the right order or not at all… and Blogging, it seems is a world of extremes too.

When Maria was looking for a Guest Post for her holiday (not that I’m jealous of her, much!) it struck me just how good blogging can be, as well as a few other things I’d noticed that show a slightly darker side to the minefield that is the internet and social networking and blogging.

Just like everything else, I have really noticed the extremes of the amazingly lovely and wonderful people out there (Maria included) and sheer nastiness of the dreaded Anon Comment. Anonymous comments, more often than not, tend to be really very vicious with criticisms of your appearance, your body shape and appearance in general, of your work both on and offline, your blog content, layout and size, your opinions and beliefs and in some cases even your family, friends and partner. They are often needlessly harsh and far from the constructive criticism most people would happily receive and act upon. Many a person venturing into a space upon the web has been driven away by this hatred and bullying, but in my mind anybody who cannot put their name to their opinions and evident rage against something, has no validity and their comments are null and void.

But what really strikes me with blogging is the flip side. The people who reach out in times of trouble and of celebration. The letters and the meet-ups. The e-mails that come through from someone who really enjoyed reading what you wrote and/or identified with it in a big way. I’ve been on the receiving end of some of the nice bits. There’s a certain lady in the Blogosphere who sends me a text or a BBM when she knows I’m having a rough day and she always cheers me up. There’s another lovely lady who e-mailed me to tell that she felt good having found somebody who shared opinions about life and wanted to tell me how much she’d enjoyed reading. And there’s yet another lady with whom I exchange the notes, cards and sometimes food with on a regular basis.

And it’s not all one way. Blogging has inspired a side of me that many of my “real life” friends and colleagues would probably find quite amusing. In the last year, I’ve reached out to people who are having a tough time, because however trivial the issue might seem, I’d hate for someone to feel alone or unsupported when things are going wrong- however badly, on whatever scale. Whether it be breaking up with the person you thought you’d be spending the rest of your life with or a bad day in the office, having someone say “Hi. I’m here. If you want to chat, you know where to find me.” can make all the difference in the world. And it seems not to matter whether you live 10 miles apart or 100, whether you’re a fashion or a food blogger, whether you’re in Kent or Kazakhstan. One of the real beauties of a virtual world is that you can bring all of these people together.

And so it is, that I find myself wondering about such a strange community, where the majority of people are really quite pleasant souls and yet there are some who can’t quite bring themselves to either keep it clean or not be seen. It’s a world of extremes, but I don’t think I could leave it if I wanted to.

Big thank you to Maria for providing me with a most opportune platform for this little ramble, hope she’s having a lovely time whilst we’re all slaving away here.

A blogger's best friend...

Hello! I'm Claire from Jazzpad and whilst Maria is sunning herself on holiday (all those feeling remotely jealous say 'aye') I thought I'd give her a hand keeping her blog ticking over and offer something a little different to Frills 'n' Spills. I'm in no way trying to compete with Maria (she's far too style savvy and well-loved for that) so here's something away from styling and fashion debates which, though very different, I hope is still really relevant in the blog world.

Photography is equally, if not even more important than the written entries in blogging. It's the visuals of a blog which make the first impression, and regardless of how well-written and engaging a blogger is, chances are you won't give it a read unless there is something punchy and exciting to feast your eyes on. Be it outfit shots, photo diaries or images of haul purchases (you lucky things you), a camera is a blogger's best friend.

Your digital camera is definitely an invaluable aide to your cause, but have you ever thought about going back to basics with a manual? If you're reading this and think "psssh, I'm a 35mm pro, she's preaching to the converted," then apologies, but if you're the sort who has wanted to dabble in manual for a while but just never really had the courage to do so, I implore you.

These are all taken with what must be the best starter manual Lomo camera, the Colorsplash. It was my first toy camera which I've had for about 3 years now, and apart from a couple of winding/learning/teething problems at the very beginning, it has never let me down. The same cannot be said for my Holga Mini, which is still sitting on my naughty shelf. With long-exposure settings, multi-coloured flash options, relatively cheap price, and the tendency to prompt conversation from any onlooker ("Is that a gun? A microscope?"), I would not trade it for the world.

There is something quite romantic about manual film. It's the excitement of forgetting what you've snapped, and months later stumbling across a slightly over-exposed shot of a building you'd walked past on a holiday and can't remember the name of it. It's something you really can't mimic with digital images, and with the magic of developing film it's possible to put your manual snaps on a CD, so you can still share them with the world.

It really is a cup of tea...

So all that is left to say is a big thank you to Maria for letting me ramble on in her arena. For me, her USP is her ability to involve readers; I love the way every post of hers has a question at the end of it, to prompt your involvement with whatever inspiration she offers that day. It's something no other blogger does quite so well, but of course you know this - why else would you be reading her blog?

Either way, I hope you liked this little filler post while she is away, and if you do have any questions or comments about anything Colorsplash-related or otherwise, this is my blog and I would love to hear from you. PEACE xxx

Maria meets...

Welcome to a new feature on Frills 'n' Spills; 'Maria Meets...' I am hoping to interview and get to know a bit more about some interesting and creative people. I hope that this will be a fairly regular feature so I would love to hear your recommendations for who you would like me to feature, please let me know in the comments if you have any ideas! :D

The first person I have interviewed is my gorgeous friend, Neha Bhargava who I met whilst interning over the summer. She writes a baking blog at Shortcake and Snap and her photography portfolio is over at Neha Bhargava photography.

♥ Tell us a bit about yourself...

I'm 23, graduated back in 2009 from UCL in Human Sciences and now I work as a Technology Consultant at IBM. Whilst at university I was the Play Photo Editor of the London Student newspaper, so after graduating I decided to take my photography to the next level and started working on my fashion portfolio.

♥ So, who or what got you interested in photography?

Strangely enough, I just fell into photography. I started out doing digital art, moved onto vector art and then photography naturally followed. Also, can’t possibly go without mentioned the wonderful community at DeviantART who gave me bucketloads of inspiration and
support when I was starting out.

♥ Do you have a favourite photographer? (Celebrity or otherwise)

I absolutely love Patrick Demarchelier’s work, and also Andreas Sjödin who has done a lot of the photography for H&M in the past. I actually applied for work experience with Patrick Demarchelier’s studio in the wild off-chance that maybe they would want an
intern/slave to help out! Besides that, Jeff Hahn, a personal friend of mine. He’s an amazing artist, with real vision and presence.

♥ What are your views on sites such as Tumblr, WeHeartIt etc? Is it difficult to retain authorship of your work?

Social networking is both a blessing and a curse. It’s fantastic to be able to get your work broadcasted out there but it’s never nice when someone claims the credit for your work. A lot of effort and preparation goes into everyone’s work, be it a photo shoot or just an evening meal. Equally annoying is when your work is put up without acknowledgement because a main part of it is to get your name out there and associated with your work! Enough with the moaning though, I think websites like tumblr are great for the snapshot “Hey look what I
stumbled across” moments to spread the word.

♥  I always feel nervous in front of the camera, how do you get your subjects to relax?

I’ve had my fair share of nervous models and subjects and I find the easiest way is to make them laugh, however ridiculous the means! Once all that nervous energy’s out, everybody can relax and just have fun with it. That’s what photo shoots really should be about.

♥ Who or what is your ideal subject and why?

I do like to shoot fashion, but my favourite subject is food because you can eat it straight after :D

♥ I just bought a new camera, do you have any tips for anyone starting out in photography?

Don’t just go straight for the top end camera that everyone’s talking about, it might not suit the type of photography you want to start doing. Do a bit of research before making such a big investment, so you could ask some friends who are photographers or can get you in touch with them, narrow down to a few choices and go down to a camera shop and ask for a side-by-side comparison so that you can find a camera body that’ll last you a good while. Also, get a good starter lens that’s multi-purpose, like an 18-200mm lens or something similar,so that you can learn the ins and outs of the camera body first.

♥ What is your 'go-to' outfit?

Skinny jeans and a top that usually has volume towards the bottom. I like the idea of having something casual mixed up with elegance and a bit of punk. Either that or dresses – I'm obsessed with dresses.

♥ Desert island book, film, album and blog/website?

Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith (amazing sci-fi book, which is only bettered by Spares, but personally I think this one is the best).

Film would have to be Serenity as it’s a fantastic sum-up to the original series Firefly, even though you don’t get to find anything out about Shepherd!!

Album would be Adele 19, at the moment, because I’m completely in love with her voice.

Finally, blog would be Tartelette – beautiful photography and delicious recipes.

A HUGE thank you to Neha for letting me interview her :) If anyone wants to be featured or has any ideas about who you would like to see next then let me know in the comments :)

Taking a deep breath...

... and diving into the big wide world. One of the reasons we have neglected the blog (and you lovely people!) recently is that since moving into our uni house we have been having a few problems with our accommodation. Leaks in our house mean that we are restricted on the number of bathrooms we can use, which is a bit of a pain with 5 of us here at the moment... you gotta love student housing!

Lovely!
My mood wasn't helped after Mark managed to shrink my favourite jumper that I featured on the last post. I was so upset when I pulled it out of the washing machine- it was literally the size of a child's jumper :'( I was going to put a picture up but it is just too upsetting! The icing on the cake was when I had to rush to A&E on Wednesday evening. My left arm swelled up and went all numb with sharp, shooting pains which was terrifying and confusing in equal part- fun huh?! Thank you to everyone on Twitter who sent such lovely messages of support, they really helped to keep me occupied whilst I was stuck waiting to see a doctor. I arrived home at about 10pm to find my house mates waiting up to see if I was OK and a really cute note on my door...

Aren't they lovely?! :)
I think the worst part about being back at uni though, is the insane amount of work we both have on at the moment. In addition to lectures, reading and essay preparation, Danni and I have our dissertations to start and read for. I really don't know where to start but luckily my dissertation supervisor is FAB and just the person I wanted so with any luck, I will be able to produce a coherent 10,000 word essay (EEK!)

I think at some point I am going to have a mental breakdown, so I am trying to distract myself with reading blogs and making myself into a Mad Men cartoon. Yes you did read that right. The lovely Fashion editor at large wrote a post about this and posted it on Twitter and I have spent my afternoon making cartoons of my house mates. (Yes I am that cool! :P) You should definitely make your own cartoon but I warn you now, it is ridiculously addictive :)

I LOVE the Pete Campbell cartoon- it's perfect!

In other news, it is a week until I get to see my family for a celebration of my 21st birthday which I am REALLY looking forward to. You would think at my age, the novelty of birthdays would have worn off but apparently not! I still don't know what I will be doing with my friends/ on the day itself but if any of you have already celebrated your 21st, do you have any tips?

What did you do for your last birthday? Do you have any ideas to keep me sane over the next couple of weeks?

A-maze-ing!

I just couldn't resist the cheesy pun! :D Last week, a maze was erected in Trafalgar Square to promote London's West End. The best part of it was though was that the hedges were provided by (I kid you not!) Rent-a-hedge - WOW. A couple of us went from work in our lunch break and although there was a bit of a queue, it moved quite quickly and we were soon inside... I love exploring and a mini maze was the perfect opportunity- how could I pass that up?!

It was filled with blue signs with interesting facts about the areas and copies of the street signs at every turn

Can you spot the spelling mistake?

Michael Caine is definitely much catchier than Maurice Micklewhite!

There were also photos from the Swinging Sixties- I have complete fringe envy!

Danni and I loved Carnaby Street when we visited and I definitely want to go again!

How chic do these women look? I am really craving short hair at the moment as people on twitter will know- I keep spamming people with hair envy pictures! I think this would be my ideal style...

...if only I had the cheekbones to match!

BEFORE...

AFTER!
Luckily trimming my fringe seems to have fulfilled my need for change, for the time being at least!

What have you guys been up to? Have you made any changes recently?

Butterflies in my stomach

When I met up with Rebecca on Sunday, one of my biggest worries was what to wear? When you are meeting one of your blogging idols, the pressure is really on! Luckily I had an outfit all planned out... Originally I planned to wear a black skirt but in the end I thought shorts would be more practical...
Top: Zara
Cardigan: F&F at Tesco
Shorts: Miss Selfridge
Shoes: New Look
Necklace: Accessorize- it is the CUTEST little owl ever!
Corsage: New Look

This isn't the most exciting post ever but I really do like making an effort with my hair and make-up too. It was so nice to dress up for something and get Mark to take some photos for me. When I am wearing a variation of black skirt and pretty blouse to the office, it's not really worth taking photos but I hope you agree that this outfit was blogworthy! It was so lovely to meet Rebecca and her sister (whose name I have forgotten, sorry!) and hopefully my shyness didn't scare her off! It has also reaffirmed my desire to meet as many of you lovely ladies as possible and I am going to try and organise a get together soon! If you have any ideas about where or when then please please please let me know and I will try and get something sorted out! :)

Which bloggers would you love to meet? Have you met any of your idols?

P.S. Rebecca has written up the day HERE and her pictures are fab so go and take a look!

Busy busy busy!

 * WARNING: PICTURE HEAVY!*

First of all I would like to apologise for the distinct lack of bloggage from me recently. As you may already know if you follow me on Twitter, I have been in London for nearly a month now doing my summer internship and I can't believe I am nearly half way through! The worst bit about working in Central London though is the travelling, it takes me about 45 minutes to an hour on the train and it is just so busy... I guess that's why it's called rush hour though right?! I am lucky though, that when I get off the train , I have a nice walk across the river.
My building is the one on the left of the picture. It was built between 1936 and 1938 so it's is in an art deco style, lots of glass and marble everywhere! I would take a picture but security wouldn't let me :( It is right next to the Strand and about 5 minutes walk from Covent Garden, lovely in a cultural sense but very bad for my purse!!
Here you can see my friend Sophie, doing her best tour guide impression! We decided to act like tourists for a while and much hilarity ensued!
Sophie looking as gorgeous as ever! She is so tanned at the moment, I am all for being pale and interesting but I really do envy her her healthy glow!
I came straight from work so apologies for the slightly dazed look!
We were SO excited about this!
I was also lucky enough to see Mark this weekend! He came down to visit me on Friday and went back this morning... we had a very busy weekend, going to see Toy Story 3 on Saturday which I can thoroughly recommend! (It is definitely a weeper though!!) and going on to do some shopping at Covent Garden :)
What could be nicer than yummy fruit tarts on a summers day? These were from Le Pain Quotidien and although they are fairly expensive, they were worth every penny! My stomach is rumbling just thinking about them! Mark and I also went for a meal at a little cafe near Covent Garden, Cafe des Amis. They had a lunchtime deal on and the food was EXQUISITE and I think I may have found the world's most perfect chocolate mousse.
YUM!
I also found the love of my life this weekend... Move aside Mark, meet my new, very snazzy, Blackberry!
It really is love!
I was also lucky enough to meet the lovely Rebecca of The Clothes Horse and her sister on Sunday and we went on the London Eye. Now I have been on it once before with my family but it has been years. Luckily the sun came out and we were able to see for miles around.
I'm not great with heights but weirdly enough I was OK on the Eye, except when Mark tried to get me to stand right at the very end of the pod, I was hanging on VERY tightly! :P
I will leave you with this incredible chalk drawing. It is a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation and the detail is incredible!

I hope you managed to make it through to the end of this post! Do you have any recommendations for stuff to do whilst I am in London?

P.S. Rebecca has written up the day HERE and her pictures are fab so go and take a look!
