Date night denim...

This post contains jeans that were sent for review

When House of Fraser got in touch to see if I was interested in styling some of their jeans, I jumped at the chance. I have been looking for a replacement pair for these leather look trousers for a while so thought I would take a risk on these coated Biba jeans for a similar look. Imagine my surprise when they arrived and looked more like a pair of sexy waterproof trousers than waxed jeans! Once I had got over the shock, I tried them on and they actually fit really well, something I was worried about as Biba usually runs pretty small for me. Paired with a swooshy tunic top, I was sold and I wore them out for dinner and drinks with Mark. 'Date night' is one of those things that can feel a bit contrived (especially when you live together!) but it's nice to have an excuse to get all dressed up and trying good food and drink is a great way to spend time together. I always hate the idea of going out but we always have a lot of fun when we force ourselves to get out of the house, I just need to tear myself away from Netflix for more than five minutes...

Top: Daisy Street, jeans: c/o House of Fraser, shoes: Hobbs (gift from my parents)
Whatever I did, I couldn't get my hair to work with this outfit so I opted for a mini quiff to keep it off my face and paired it with this gorgeous pink lipstick: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipstick in Pink Pong 06 . I love the transformative power of bright lippie, the rest of my make-up was pretty minimal but thanks to this hot pink shade, I still felt pulled together.

I had been looked for a swing-y tunic top for a while and I'm really pleased with this one from Daisy Street,it has a nice high neckline, making it ideal for work but the split sides and looser fit make it nice and light too, especially with more fitted trousers like these. The jeans are actually a dark navy, but look almost black here which I really like, dark jeans always look dressier to me! I don't tend to wear much black but I'm really impressed with this top and am seriously tempted to order the other colours too

A closer look at the coating on the jeans and the zip detail at the ankles. We joked that actually waterproof trousers would be great for wearing out, at least if someone spilt their drink down you, it would just wipe off! ;) I was lucky enough that my parents bought me these beautiful cerise Mary Janes when I graduated and although I don't wear them as much as I would like, they were the perfect way to add a bit of interest to a very plain (for me!) outfit.

How would you style these jeans?

P.S. I was sent these jeans to review but if I didn't love them, I wouldn't feature them!

Feeling like a million dollars...

Anyone who has ever read this blog knows that I will take any opportunity to get all dressed up and this outfit was the perfect accompaniment to our meal at Jamie's. I don't always wear all black but when the textures and fabrics are this fun, how can you resist? I felt like a million dollars in this outfit and I really wanted to celebrate that with these pictures. I mean confidence is always worth celebrating, amirite?! For full luxury vibes I paired my outfit with this gorgeous camel coat which I got off Mark for my birthday, it may be brighter but it is still chilly out there! The length of this coat can be a pretty tricky one when you are as short as I am but paired with heels or slim trousers, it works quite nicely.

Coat: H&M (gift from Mark), top: ASOS, skirt: Monki, shoes: Whistles via eBay
I couldn't believe just how pale I ended up looking in these pictures, I suppose the contrast helps the black look more dramatic?! It took me so long to find a top that went with the skirt, I knew I wanted something simple but everything was either too fussy or just outright boring, at least it was until I found this twist neck top at ASOS. It is now on sale (typical) and I am tempted to get it in a couple of colours. It is pretty short in the body but I have a lot of high-waisted skirts that this will look ace with! I didn't realise how creased this skirt was until I saw these pictures, does anyone know the best way to iron tulle?!

Just look how jazzy that neckline is! I recently treated myself to a couple of new lipsticks and this L'Oreal Liya Pure Red is my new favourite. It is a really bright red with pinky undertones (although it's nowhere near as pink as the Julianne red!) and it was the perfect statement lip.

This Monki tulle skirt is just dreamy and although the midi length was a bit challenging to style, I really love it. Tulle anything is always a winner in my book and the length means it was perfect for swooshing round in! This skirt was also the perfect foil for my gorgeous Whistles Dana sandals, they are just a dreamy combination together! I can't wait to wear them in the summer, won't they look great with this smock dress? They are a pretty high heel but the caged element makes them slightly easier to walk in, I will just have to get in a bit of practice before I next wear them! ;)

What I wore to an Autumn wedding...

Last weekend, Mark and I hopped into the car to head up to Chester to see one of my closest friends get married. I first met Ian on my internship four years ago and we have been friends ever since. I had never been to Chester before, despite my Grandad being a huge fan (it is where he went to college) and although we didn't get to see much time in the city itself, we will definitely be making a return visit. We stayed at a Travelodge the night before so we had plenty of time to get ready and these photos were taken in the car park- just be glad we managed to keep the Little Chef out of shot! The wedding itself was lovely and the reception was at Highfield Hall, a beautiful manor house in North Wales. Weddings can be tricky things to dress for and I wanted something a little different to the dresses that I wore to my cousin's and my best friend's wedding so I dug out my trusty 'prom dress' instead. I felt really comfortable in this dress and I think that shows in the pictures. There's nothing better than an outfit that make you feel like you can take on the world and this is certainly mine!

Dress: Tesco, bag: ASOS, shoes:Clarks, fascinator: Umberto Giannini via Boots
I finally managed to get my haircut the evening before the wedding and the blow dry lasted overnight. This is my top tip for good hair at a wedding, I certainly couldn't make it look this good myself, especially as you know that there will be plenty of photos being taken throughout the day. Vain, moi?! As we are now definitely in Autumn, I paired some liquid eyeliner with this awesome orange lipstick (a mixture of the orange Max Factor lipstain and the Revlon Just Bitten lipstain in Rendezvous). I always cry at weddings so I tend not to wear any eyeliner or mascara on my lower lashes so I can blub away without ruining my make-up- there's nothing worse than smeary panda eyes! I picked up this jazzy barette in my local Boots store where it was reduced to 50p rather than £8 and it was perfect as it didn't overwhelm my short hair but was still fun.

I bought this clutch bag in a moment of minor panic last week but I couldn't have been more thrilled when it arrived. The colour is ace, it matches my shoes perfectly and best of all, it is absolutely massive! It also makes me feel pretty cool so it definitely gets bonus points for that! Orange is one of my favourite colours and it made this dress seem more Autumn appropriate...

I couldn't write this post without giving a shoutout to these wonderful shoes. They are so comfy and the colour makes them super fun to wear. I just wish Clarks did them in ever colour!

Gold and burgundy...

A couple of weekends ago my grandparents threw a mini party (read cake and ice-cream) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their engagement. You know I take any excuse to dress up and this burgundy dress was ideal for the chilly weather. Burgundy is one of my favourite colours to wear and it feels really decadent (especially when paired with faux fur and gold accessories) It was massively windy when Mark was taking this pictures so they look pretty silly but they were also quite fun, it's impossible to take yourself too seriously when the wind is threatening to blow you over!

Coat: Topshop, dress: Tesco, necklace: Accessorize, shoes: Topshop
This dress is such a lovely fit and it was so nice to style it up in a more fun way than I would usually would. It is a work staple but usually black tights and a cardigan are as exciting as it gets so bare legs and gold accessories are much more interesting! I'm not sure why I look so grumpy in these pictures, I was actually grinning my head off when we took these pictures!

I picked up these gold sparkly shoes in the Topshop sale a few weeks ago for a mere £7 and they are my favourite shoes at the moment (no word of a lie, I am seriously tempted to get the monochrome pair too!) There's nothing like a pair of gold sparkly shoes to cheer you up!

Polka dot prom dress...

I love a good prom dress, especially if it has a swooshy tulle skirt and this spotty little number from Tesco looks really fancy but isn't the slightest bit uncomfortable - a winning combination in my eyes! The best part though was that although it looks pretty expensive, it only cost £25 from Tesco. I would be more than happy to pay that for a dress this pretty but I was lucky enough to win the lovely Sarah's giveaway a few months ago and this was one of the things I picked up with my voucher. I wore it for my third (and final) day of Christmas and it was perfect; the layers of tulle managed to hide my food baby and I felt really happy in it. I have resolved to really focus on my health this year and as I plan to (eventually) run a 5k with my boo Claire I have started my running up again. It is slow work but I hope that I will feel even more confident this year once my health improves even more!

Dress: Tesco, cardigan: BHS via Mark's mum, shoes: Clarks, posey face: model's own
Although the dress is mainly black, I wanted to try something slightly more interesting with it than my trusty black opaques and as the weather was so nice I plumped for some nude tights and my favourite pair of heels. Thank goodness for mild winters eh?! I was a very lucky girl this Christmas and Mark bought me the black patent versions too as I love these shoes so much!

You can tell how mild the weather has been, I was chilly when I took my cardigan off to take these pictures but nowhere near cold, I couldn't believe it! I know some people aren't fans of sleeveless dresses but I love them and I'm sure you could layer a thin top or long sleeved body underneath if you are self conscious... Prom dresses are universally flattering and this one has gone straight to the top of my list of favourite party frocks! I was going to wear this dress on New Year's Eve but I decided to go for my perfect party dress instead as this was still in the wash - the glamourous truth behind fashion blogging eh?! ;)

I never know how to style my hair with a high neckline, a bun just looked strange and my usual side sweep of curls was far too busy looking so I decided to experiment with my hot brush and ended up with a bouncy cheerleader ponytail. Paired with winged eyeliner and a bright lipstick, I looked as chirpy as I felt. I think you can see from these photos how much I loved this outfit, now I just need Tesco to make a version of this dress in every colour!

What are your goals for 2014?

1 party dress, 3 ways (PICTURE HEAVY)...

When the lovely folks at Voucher Codes got in touch to ask me to style one dress, three ways (to prove that you don't have to spend a fortune on all of those Christmas party outfits), I leapt at the chance. This year will be the first time I haven't been living at home and as Mark and I will be spending our first Christmas together in addition to one with each of our families, I need a hard-working dress! I chose this red lace beauty from Miss Selfridge, I love a red party dress - much more interesting than an LBD and perfectly festive too.

Look # 1: A classic Christmas party look - perfect for meeting up with friends and dancing your socks Christmas stockings off...
Dress: Miss Selfridge (c/o Voucher Codes), belt: Miss Selfridge (c/o Voucher Codes), nude fishnets: Accessorize,  shoes: Bertie
When I saw this gorgeous bejewelled belt from Miss Selfridge, my inner magpie was more than happy; there is nothing I love more than a bit of bling! I do think £28 is a bit extortionate, however, but maybe a craftier blogger than I could do a D.I.Y?!

I love the delicate lace, definitely the best way to work some sheer pieces into your wardrobe!
One thing I didn't realise when I ordered it was that the dress had a 'dippy hem'. I really cannot see the point of these but luckily the front of the dress was long enough for me not to get too annoyed about it and before long I was swooshing around in all the extra material. I think the clunkiness of the shoes also helped to balance the floaty hem too. What do you think?

The sheer back is lovely and I love how pale my skin looks next to the red. Winter is the one time of year where I don't look abnormally pale, as everyone else is a little bit more ghostly ;)

Look # 2: An evening in the pub - understated yet still festive (just add antlers)...

Dress: Miss Selfridge (as above), belt: vintage, shoes: ASOS, clutch bag: Topshop, nude fishnets: Accessorize
Ever since I started blogging, many moons ago, I have wanted to do an outfit (head to toe) in one colour and although I am missing some red tights, this is pretty darn close! These red satin shoes always make me feel like a ballerina and are jazzy enough to look like you have made an effort, so you can feel nice and smug whilst everyone else is wincing in their heels.

A vintage belt and the cutest clutch bag known to man add the finishing touches!

Look # 3: The work Christmas do - from desk to dinner...

Dress: Miss Selfridge (as above),  tights: M&S, shoes: Primark, clutch bag: c/o Accessories Direct
With a natty little cardigan (yes I am 85 years old!) I think this would be perfect for work, especially if (like me) your party starts in the afternoon rather than the evening. If in doubt just add black tights and some simple court shoes, amirite?!

A giant bow clutch bag always helps me to feel 'party ready' (what a hideous phrase!) Who needs statement jewellery when you have a dress this nice?!

A slightly closer look at the lovely sweetheart neckline and my make-up: a simple smoky eye with a scarlet pout works for any occasion in my opinion!

How would you style this dress? Have you got your Christmas outfits planned?
P.S. Many thanks to Voucher Codes for their generous offer, I hope I have given you some inspiration for your festive frock!

Breton stripes (and black glitter ankle boots!)...

As we edge into Autumn, I pulled out this striped dress again and added some slightly more seasonally appropriate accessories to combat the chillier weather. I wore it to meet up for lunch with the lovely Hattie a few weeks ago. It is always nice to see her, even of we are the worst bloggers for taking photos when we meet up!
Dress: Isabella Oliver (clothes swap), leather jacket: New Look, belt: Primark, socks: H&M, ankle boots: Primark
Since buying the new Kate Moss lipstick, I having been loving richer berry shades and this Revlon Matte is that perfect shade of 'just finished a bottle a glass of red wine'.

Plus it matches perfectly with my nail varnish, Nails Inc. in Tate. Slightly darker than your classic reds, it's one I always go back to when I want a dramatic but wearable look.

The highlight of this outfit was definitely these shoes, though. Is there anything more fun than black glitter ankle boots?! I bought these to wear out on my birthday (I think they are suitably party-like!) but realised that I hadn't actually broken them in so I dug out my ankle socks again to protect my feet against the inevitable blisters. Although they are from Primark, they are surprisingly comfortable and they don't shed too much glitter when I walk, which is always a risk with glitter shoes!

Would you wear glitter ankle boots? How do you transition your clothes from season to season?

Daffodil dress...

Easter is always a big occasion in my family and this year was no exception. It was fantastic to see nearly all of my family and as ever, the food was fantastic! These photos have been sitting on my computer for ages but I wore a variation of this outfit for all the Easter festivities...

Dress: Topshop, blazer: Tesco, belt: New Look, shoes: Bertie
This seems to be my go to dress for family occasions where you want to look like you have made an effort but also know that there is going to be lots of nice food- although I would usually avoid a drop waist, this one seems to skim my food baby nicely ;)

Another day, another backless dress!

The colours on this dress were described as looking like a daffodil, like custard and the inside of a Crème Egg, perfect for my new-found love for the colour yellow

I love the tiny pleats and the contrasting sleeves. I never thought I would be a fan of either yellow or leopard print but here I am wearing both in one outfit... blogging has certainly taken me out of my comfort zone!

Worn with my 'Miss Piggy' shoes... the perfect chunky heel!

Outtake of the day: trying to twirl and looking like a fool...

The best part of Easter for me though has to be the Easter Egg hunt, you're never too old for hunting chocolate right?!

What did you do at Easter? Do you like Easter egg hunts?

Eastern inspired...

Getting hold of this dress was darn near impossible,I first saw it at the New Look press day almost a year ago and fell in love but despite stalking the New Look website fr months I couldn't find it. I knew they had put it into production because it was featured in nearly every magazine I read and I WANTED IT. Luckily, Mark managed to get hold of it and I very happily unwrapped it on Christmas Day

Dress:New Look, shoes: Hobbs
One detail I really loved about it was the fact it was backless but I hadn't really thought about how practical this would be for 'real life' and as stick on bras DID NOT WORK (I'm looking at you Primark!) I had to do the next best thing and wear a pretty bra instead...

The high neckline and satiny fabric reminded me of traditional oriental clothing, especially with the bird print and the little details really reinforced this...

Gorgeous covered buttons...

The fitted shape ensure that this is extremely flattering, especially on a curvier figure...

I went for peachy make-up to match the gorgeous bird print [Do you see what I mean about the photos looking much softer with this camera?]

I really loved this dress but I don't know if I have made it look too formal, would it look better a bit more scruffed up? If I was less precious about it?

How would you style this? How do you solve the problem of  making backless dresses wearable?

P.S. I received a comment which informed me that Oriental is in fact a racist term which I was TOTALLY unaware of when I wrote this so I have changed the title of the post. I am utterly mortified that I could have offended anyone and I apologise if I did.
