Peanut butter and banana cookies recipe...

I was recently offered a copy of Eric Lanlard's Afternoon Tea to review and I jumped at the chance. I own a lot of recipe books but very few that are baking focused. This one is beautiful and full of delicious recipes. It's not necessarily a book for complete beginners (I wouldn't know where to start with making tuna and pumpernickel mille feuille for instance!) but there are some interesting twists on classic recipes- I can't wait to try the savoury macarons! I did find it difficult to choose which recipe to try first but I decided to be nice and bake something for Mark for a change! I'm not normally a fan of banana in bakes but these cookies were absolutely divine. I ate 2 when they were fresh out of the oven and spent the next few days working my way through the rest.

Trialling the Triumph Magic Wire bra...

This post contains a bra that was sent for review

I have been wanting to try the Triumph Magic Wire bra ever since the lovely Poppy raved about it back in September last year. The metal underwiring has been replaced by a piece of silicone which offers the same support without any of the digging in. House of Fraser very kindly offered to send me some underwear and this was the only possible choice for me. A nude bra is hardly the most exciting piece but under certain tops or dresses it is essential and is certainly a staple of my wardrobe. After wearing this all day to run various errands, I can confirm that this is the comfiest bra I have ever tried on and I will be buying it in all its different variations, it really is that good!
Bra: c/o House of Fraser
Recently, I have found that I have been dressing up less and less, especially at the weekend. This is partly practical- it is difficult to hoover the car in a mini skirt but partly because the clothes I am choosing aren't (necessarily) as unique. When I was a student, I spent a lot of time hunting down bargains in charity shops whereas now I order most of my clothes online, or pick them up in supermarkets. That isn't to say I don't love those clothes, just that I suppose my wardrobe is more generic than it used to be! This blouse is one such item, I picked it up in the sale at Sainsbury's after spilling some food down my front (I am an adult, I promise!) and have been wearing it nonstop ever since. I don't usually get on with sleeves but these are really floaty and the loose shape means that I am not boiling to death in it which is always a risk in the summer. The embroidery on this also makes it much more interesting and I really love the contrast of the bright blue with the white, it feels very fresh and summery!

I have been raving about Elemis Pro Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm over on Instagram but it deserves a mention here too. I got a sample on the front of Marie Claire magazine and it has already become an integral part of my beauty routine. It makes my skin look glowy without being shiny and I really love it! I have been applying it onto freshly cleansed skin under my beloved Dr Jart BB cream and looking much more alive as a result. It isn't cheap at £35 but a little goes a long way so I may just buy a couple more magazines instead...

My beloved Warehouse skinnies have been looking a bit worse for wear recently but they are just so comfy that I am reluctant to give them up just yet, here's hoping a similar pair come up in the sale! Usually when the weather hots up I go for bright nail varnishes but recently I have been loving more autumnal shades, maybe because they contrast so well with my summery clothes? There is an exception to every rule though and I have been wearing Nails Inc Gel Effect Kensington Passage nail varnish on my toenails ever since I got it in my Glamour beauty box. It is the perfect coral shade and even makes pasty pale old me look like I have a tan!

Have you tried the Triumph Magic Wire bra yet? Are you as big a fan as me?

P.S. I was sent this bra to review but if I didn't love it, I wouldn't feature it!

Date night denim...

This post contains jeans that were sent for review

When House of Fraser got in touch to see if I was interested in styling some of their jeans, I jumped at the chance. I have been looking for a replacement pair for these leather look trousers for a while so thought I would take a risk on these coated Biba jeans for a similar look. Imagine my surprise when they arrived and looked more like a pair of sexy waterproof trousers than waxed jeans! Once I had got over the shock, I tried them on and they actually fit really well, something I was worried about as Biba usually runs pretty small for me. Paired with a swooshy tunic top, I was sold and I wore them out for dinner and drinks with Mark. 'Date night' is one of those things that can feel a bit contrived (especially when you live together!) but it's nice to have an excuse to get all dressed up and trying good food and drink is a great way to spend time together. I always hate the idea of going out but we always have a lot of fun when we force ourselves to get out of the house, I just need to tear myself away from Netflix for more than five minutes...

Top: Daisy Street, jeans: c/o House of Fraser, shoes: Hobbs (gift from my parents)
Whatever I did, I couldn't get my hair to work with this outfit so I opted for a mini quiff to keep it off my face and paired it with this gorgeous pink lipstick: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipstick in Pink Pong 06 . I love the transformative power of bright lippie, the rest of my make-up was pretty minimal but thanks to this hot pink shade, I still felt pulled together.

I had been looked for a swing-y tunic top for a while and I'm really pleased with this one from Daisy Street,it has a nice high neckline, making it ideal for work but the split sides and looser fit make it nice and light too, especially with more fitted trousers like these. The jeans are actually a dark navy, but look almost black here which I really like, dark jeans always look dressier to me! I don't tend to wear much black but I'm really impressed with this top and am seriously tempted to order the other colours too

A closer look at the coating on the jeans and the zip detail at the ankles. We joked that actually waterproof trousers would be great for wearing out, at least if someone spilt their drink down you, it would just wipe off! ;) I was lucky enough that my parents bought me these beautiful cerise Mary Janes when I graduated and although I don't wear them as much as I would like, they were the perfect way to add a bit of interest to a very plain (for me!) outfit.

How would you style these jeans?

Gorgeous glasses 8) ...

When I went to the opticians last year, I was terrified slightly apprehensive. I knew that I needed to wear glasses, having worn them throughout my teen years (hilarious MySpace photo proof here!)  but I had never managed to find a pair that I liked enough to wear consistently so when I was told that I needed to wear them all the time, I panicked. Luckily there is a lot more choice available now (especially for the right price!) and over the past year I have had some rather lovely pairs making full use of the various deals at Specsavers to give myself a bit of choice. Mark is always horrified that I am willing to pay so much for some frames but I figure that I am wearing them everyday and a good fashion blogger needs choice, amirite?! ;)

This pair were from the Gok Wan at Specsavers range and were my go to pair for everyday wear. The colour and shape are pretty inoffensive and easy to wear without becoming the focus of an outfit. I liked them but they never set the world on fire...

These glasses on the other hand were a statement pair, worn when I was feeling either particularly confident or particularly timid. It is difficult to be shy and retiring when you have such a humongous pair of frames on your face! I actually preferred the colour of these to the other Gok Wan pair but they can seem a bit harsh and definitely need to be paired with strong lipstick to work!

These burgundy beauties are a new addition to my glasses collection and are actually from Karen Millen- not a brand I was particularly familiar with, until I saw these beauties. I love the burgundy frame and they are an easy way to introduce a splash of colour to an outfit without looking too gimmicky. The tone of the  purple seems to change depending on what colours I wear them with which I also like, you can't beat versatility!

As you can see, I tend to go for an oversized cat-eye shape and this pair are absolutely gorgeous. I think the  shape of the frame suits my face better than my last oversized pair and the gold detail across the top adds some subtle glamour. (The fact that they reminded me of a more wearable version of these also helped with my choice!) It was really difficult to photograph them properly but this photo gives more of an idea of the blinginess...

Despite my unsure looking face, this last pair have probably been my favourite ones to wear recently. When MyOptique asked if I wanted to try one of the pairs of glasses from their 'London Retro' range, I leapt at the chance. These glasses are like the lovechild of my first two pairs and those of a 1950s secretary- cat eye perfection! I was worried that they might seem a little costume-y at first but actually the shape is less cartoony in real life and more subtle than these photos make them seem. I had never heard of London Retro before they got in touch but any brand that names a range of glasses after Tube stations is A-OK with me...

A snazzy orange leather lined case doesn't hurt either! 8)

Do you wear glasses? How do you choose your frames?

The Lazy Hostess...

Although I love having friends and family over to visit, I am the world's laziest hostess. Whilst I love fancy meals and admire anyone who has the brainpower to work out meal timings (Mark) and delicious recipes, I am not one of them.   If we ever have people over, I tend to go with my tried-and-tested combination of pizzas, homemade bread, lots of nibbly snacks and plenty of booze. It's not fancy but it sure is fun!

This bread is always the pièce de résistance of any social gatherings that we have. I sometimes use a packet mix of Parmesan and sundried tomato but if I am feeling more adventurous I use our bread-maker to mix up a dough using 1 tsp of yeast, 14 oz of strong white flour, 15 g of butter, 1 tbsp of milk powder, 1 tbsp pf sugar, 1 tsp of salt and 280 ml of water. I sometimes add garlic or rosemary but tomato and cheese really is the best combination! Once it has made a dough (45 minutes) I knead the mixture and add it to a tray in roll shapes and bake for 15 minutes. These quantities can make a loaf or a 'tear and share' bread but the latter is better if you have a group of people over. I really love our bread-maker and the fact that you can have fresh bread within an hour never fails to cheer me up!

The contents of our alcohol cabinet taking up a good portion of the table (ahem). We usually just buy lots of crisps, a big bag of salad and cook some new potatoes to keep everyone nice and full- no-one has complained of being hungry yet!

When I was offered the opportunity to review 'The Lazy Hostess'- Babe Scott's new book, I was intrigued. It promises to cover everything from drinks, to food and even inspiration for your outfit. (I wore a snazzy jumper and jeans combo for this meet up!) Although I cringed at some of the phrases used to describe the book (putting the 'ho' into 'hostess' being the main one) I actually really like it. The book is filled with fun quotes and easy to follow cocktail recipes (always key for me as I never know what to make/buy!)

In the name of science (!) Sophie and I decided to try and make the sinister sounding 'Mafia's Kiss' which had only 3 ingredients. I am a massive fan of Amaretto and cranberry juice so anything that manages to combine these two ingredients will definitely get my seal of approval!

I would guess that the majority of people would have at least 1 out of the three ingredients required for this cocktail so it is ideal if you need to make something at short notice that still looks and tastes fancy. Thank goodness for Mark who managed to take a photo of this before we drank the entire jug and spent the rest of the evening giggling our way through Tangled and Dirty Dancing! I particularly like the fact that the book gives quantities for both individual drinks and pitchers, it definitely helps to be able to scale your quantities up or down!

Use equal parts of vodka and amaretto and then top up with cranberry juice for a truly delicious cocktail! (I am writing this at work and can't remember the exact quantities the recipe says to use but I will update this when I get home...)

This book would be the perfect gift for someone heading off to uni or just moving into their own house- it is fun but still comprehensive enough to ensure that your party goes with a bang!

What is your signature cocktail?

P.S. This book was sent to me for review

Maisie the mannequin...

You know I can't resist fun accessories and when Out There Interiors offered to send me something from their website, I couldn't resist. I have worked with them before and as I was so impressed last time I knew I was onto a good thing! I had a pretty hard time choosing what I wanted to review until I saw this wonderful mannequin. I have always wanted one but never had the space until now so when I saw it, I couldn't order it quickly enough! I was super excited when she arrived and Maisie (as I have christened her) is happily ensconced in the corner of my living room.

Click here to see all of the lovely things on Out There Interior's website

She arrived in a big box in pieces which Mark and I put together on Friday night (who says I don't know how to party?!) Thank goodness my Grandad takes in my parcels for me as the 2 ft tall box this came in would never have fitted in our letterbox!

I have to say though, I was nowhere near as impressed with this mannequin as I was with my 'M' lamp. You can see here how sloppy some of the glue is and where the fabric has worn through after rubbing on the side of the box. If I had paid full price for this I would have been really disappointed, it doesn't look like a lot of care has been taken with it :(

There's nothing better than playing dress up and luckily I have been able to disguise most of these things with a few well placed accessories ;)

How I styled a red pinafore dress...

I know some people can be a bit snobby about supermarket clothing but some of my favourite pieces have been picked up alongside my weekly shop! F&F recently got in touch about their 'How You're Wearing It' feature and asked me to choose my favourite piece from their range and show how I would style it up. In the end, I chose this red pinafore dress (my love of red dresses is well documented on this blog!) and as is usual with pinafore style dresses, I paired it with a stripey top - this here is one fashion blogger who isn't afraid to mix it up ;)

Dress: c/o F&F at Clothing at Tesco, top: Oasis, shoes: Office
I really love the fit of this dress, it hits at that perfect sweet spot just on the knee and the pleats are fab, plus you just can't beat a swooshy skirt....I know it will get a lot of wear layered up with long sleeved tops in the winter and I have a few jumpers that would be perfect for that preppy/schoolgirl vibe I love so much! I bought the dress in the next size up so I could layer it but to be honest I didn't need to, there is more than enough room...

Looking at these photos, I probably should have worn some lipstick with this but at the time it looked a bit much with the glasses, I guess photos can be deceiving!

Which things are you loving from F&F this Autumn?

The 'Magic' dress?

When F&F got in touch recently to see if I wanted to review a dress from their new 'Magic' range I have to admit that I was intrigued. This dress promises to 'smooth the tummy, shape the bottom and thighs and define the silhouette' which are some pretty big promises for one dress and I have to say I was pretty dubious! The dress features an under layer that is supposed to act like Spanx to smooth away the lumps and bumps but this ends up making the dress very tight. When it came to putting it on, I really struggled and it looks like other people found the fit very tight too, I guess if you just squash everything down it makes it more streamlined, right?!

Dress: c/o F&F, shoes: Office
Despite that though, once you get the dress on I do really like it. The colour is great and I love shift dresses, especially for work. I have reordered the dress in the next size up and I know that it will get a lot of wear at work when I have important meetings (you can't go wrong with fitted dresses!) Hopefully sizing up will give me a bit more wriggle room ;)

A better look at the colour- I really love forest green, especially in the Autumn! Whilst the fit of this dress was completely bizarre and I'm not entirely convinced by the 'magic' layer, I really like the colour and I can't wait for my replacement frock to arrive!

Me and my (Zaggora) Hotpants...

I never thought that there would be more than one post of me dressed in exercise gear on this blog but strangely enough I have been enjoying exercising (when I can motivate my sorry self to go for a run or head into the gym!) Since this first post I have expanded my collection of exercise gear and this purple and orange top is a suitably jazzy addition to my wardrobe. It is a pretty weird shape but is really comfortable and most importantly it doesn't ride up when I'm exercising - there's nothing worse than constantly having to hoick stuff up or down!

Top: Adidas,  Hotpants: c/o Zaggora, socks: Adidas, trainers: c/o Sports Shoes
I really love the colours but the best part of this top has to be the pocket. I always struggle with where to put my insulin pump when I am exercising (I could take it off but I don't like to be without it completely as it makes me a bit nervous; yet so little exercise gear has pockets.) Nike, Adidas, Reebok, whoever, if you are listening, please make more clothes with pockets, diabetics everywhere would be thrilled!

When the lovely ladies at Zaggora offered to send me some of their iconic Hotpants (no, not like these!) I was super excited. I have wanted a pair since Sarah posted about them on Where Are My Knees back in 2011 but until now I have never been exercising regularly so it wasn't worth spending the money. I was pretty dubious about their claims and as someone who is always warm (I am known to friends and family as a human radiator!) I wasn't sure whether their "signature Celu-Lite heating fabric technology" was for me. Don't read on if you are about to eat or drink or are particularly squeamish as (TMI) these bad boys are seriously sweat inducing. The first time I wore these, I had to literally peel them off me afterwards. Weirdly when I was wearing them I didn't feel sweaty at all but afterwards was a whole different story! After wearing them a few times, I can confirm that despite the weird noise they make when I move (wetsuit-like material sure makes a funny old sound!) they are really comfortable and high enough in the waist for me not to feel self-conscious about my stomach - definitely my problem area!

What do you look for in exercise gear? Have you got any ideas on how I could tone my tummy?

Mint and silver...

It comes to something when even I, with my literal mountains of clothes, can't find anything suitable to wear in the summery weather. My work wardrobe isn't really summer appropriate and I have been finding it particularly difficult to get dressed each morning. I was recently contacted by a  lovely PR lady from Surfdome to see if I was interested in doing a review and when I saw just how much stuff they had on their site (hint: loads) I jumped at the chance. I have a real soft spot for stripy tops and I will never give up on my quest for the perfect Breton tee. This one was from Billabong - a brand I associate with willowy, blonde, tanned surfer girls (clearly not a category I fit into!) and I was surprised by how much I like it.

Waistcoat: Miss Selfridge, Billabong long sleeved top: c/o Surfdome, necklace: Primark, skirt: Principles via charity shop, shoes: c/o Matalan
This mint waistcoat is another of those items that I can't bring myself to get rid of. I definitely went through a 'boho' phase when I first started uni (think lots of chunky wooden layered necklaces) and I thought it would be the perfect match for the more relaxed style of top. I like the fact it also adds a bit of colour- I'm not very good at sticking to a strict monochrome palette! This paper-bag skirt is really difficult to photograph- it is a weird almost crepe-like material and has a strange sheen which the camera can't seem to pick up properly. It may be a pain to iron but it sure looks pretty!

This top definitely has that super relaxed, oversized fit in the body but the sleeves are ridiculously tight. At first I had trouble getting my arms into them but after a bit of wriggling, I managed to adjust them to be comfortable. I'm never convinced that batwing tops are that flattering on me but I will be playing with the proportions to see if I can make it work with skinny jeans or trousers.

How would you style a batwing top?

Confessions of a leopard-print addict...

I never used to like leopard print, the first time I wore it was back in March 2011 and since then I have slowly been adding it into my wardrobe. I have stuck to accessories for now though, as I still worry that I would look a bit 'tarty' in a full blown dress or skirt. I really wish I had the confidence to pull it off! So, when House of Fraser asked if I would like to review this bag I almost bit their hands off. I love a nice mini bag like this and thought it would be perfect for those days where you don't want to carry around the kitchen sink...

Coat: vintage Dannimac via my mum, dress: Mango, bag: Biba c/o House of Fraser, belt:New Look, shoes: Office
I always seem to wear this dress with the same coat and belt, I think the camel coat makes it look a bit classier despite being a really short skirt! ;)

I am always looking for more dresses like this for work, the shape and sleeves are perfect for a temperature variable office. I love the one that Ellie wore here, does anyone have any recommendations as to where I can something similar up?

As you can see, neither the bag nor the logo is particularly subtle but then, leopard print for me is all about injecting that bit of 'oomph' into an outfit, it's definitely not for those who want to blend in! Saying that, I do like the more subtle purple leather version of the bag, isn't it the most gorgeous colour?!

The inside of the bag is absolutely HUGE, looks are definitely deceiving with this Tardis of a bag. I managed to fit my phone, diabetes stuff (about a make-up bag's worth of stuff) purse, passport and keys and still have all this room left! I think the 3 separate pockets are fab, especially if you are as prone to losing things as me and I love the print on them too. I'm not so keen on the flap and handle of the bag, it is leather but feels a bit cheap and nasty (and at an eye-watering £179.00 full price, it certainly shouldn't!) The bag is in the sale at the moment for a slightly more reasonable £89.50 which for a sturdy leather bag like this, I think is fairly reasonable even if completely opposed to the essence of the original Biba brand! (where everything was designed to be cheap and disposable)

I desperately need to get my hair cut again but I cannot be bothered to make an appointment. This twisted knot/bun has been keeping out of my (cat) eyes and is a nice way of keeping the curls off my face...

What do you think of leopard print?
