Gorgeous glasses 8) ...

When I went to the opticians last year, I was terrified slightly apprehensive. I knew that I needed to wear glasses, having worn them throughout my teen years (hilarious MySpace photo proof here!)  but I had never managed to find a pair that I liked enough to wear consistently so when I was told that I needed to wear them all the time, I panicked. Luckily there is a lot more choice available now (especially for the right price!) and over the past year I have had some rather lovely pairs making full use of the various deals at Specsavers to give myself a bit of choice. Mark is always horrified that I am willing to pay so much for some frames but I figure that I am wearing them everyday and a good fashion blogger needs choice, amirite?! ;)

This pair were from the Gok Wan at Specsavers range and were my go to pair for everyday wear. The colour and shape are pretty inoffensive and easy to wear without becoming the focus of an outfit. I liked them but they never set the world on fire...

These glasses on the other hand were a statement pair, worn when I was feeling either particularly confident or particularly timid. It is difficult to be shy and retiring when you have such a humongous pair of frames on your face! I actually preferred the colour of these to the other Gok Wan pair but they can seem a bit harsh and definitely need to be paired with strong lipstick to work!

These burgundy beauties are a new addition to my glasses collection and are actually from Karen Millen- not a brand I was particularly familiar with, until I saw these beauties. I love the burgundy frame and they are an easy way to introduce a splash of colour to an outfit without looking too gimmicky. The tone of the  purple seems to change depending on what colours I wear them with which I also like, you can't beat versatility!

As you can see, I tend to go for an oversized cat-eye shape and this pair are absolutely gorgeous. I think the  shape of the frame suits my face better than my last oversized pair and the gold detail across the top adds some subtle glamour. (The fact that they reminded me of a more wearable version of these also helped with my choice!) It was really difficult to photograph them properly but this photo gives more of an idea of the blinginess...

Despite my unsure looking face, this last pair have probably been my favourite ones to wear recently. When MyOptique asked if I wanted to try one of the pairs of glasses from their 'London Retro' range, I leapt at the chance. These glasses are like the lovechild of my first two pairs and those of a 1950s secretary- cat eye perfection! I was worried that they might seem a little costume-y at first but actually the shape is less cartoony in real life and more subtle than these photos make them seem. I had never heard of London Retro before they got in touch but any brand that names a range of glasses after Tube stations is A-OK with me...

A snazzy orange leather lined case doesn't hurt either! 8)

Do you wear glasses? How do you choose your frames?

Maisie the mannequin...

You know I can't resist fun accessories and when Out There Interiors offered to send me something from their website, I couldn't resist. I have worked with them before and as I was so impressed last time I knew I was onto a good thing! I had a pretty hard time choosing what I wanted to review until I saw this wonderful mannequin. I have always wanted one but never had the space until now so when I saw it, I couldn't order it quickly enough! I was super excited when she arrived and Maisie (as I have christened her) is happily ensconced in the corner of my living room.

Click here to see all of the lovely things on Out There Interior's website

She arrived in a big box in pieces which Mark and I put together on Friday night (who says I don't know how to party?!) Thank goodness my Grandad takes in my parcels for me as the 2 ft tall box this came in would never have fitted in our letterbox!

I have to say though, I was nowhere near as impressed with this mannequin as I was with my 'M' lamp. You can see here how sloppy some of the glue is and where the fabric has worn through after rubbing on the side of the box. If I had paid full price for this I would have been really disappointed, it doesn't look like a lot of care has been taken with it :(

There's nothing better than playing dress up and luckily I have been able to disguise most of these things with a few well placed accessories ;)

The 'Magic' dress?

When F&F got in touch recently to see if I wanted to review a dress from their new 'Magic' range I have to admit that I was intrigued. This dress promises to 'smooth the tummy, shape the bottom and thighs and define the silhouette' which are some pretty big promises for one dress and I have to say I was pretty dubious! The dress features an under layer that is supposed to act like Spanx to smooth away the lumps and bumps but this ends up making the dress very tight. When it came to putting it on, I really struggled and it looks like other people found the fit very tight too, I guess if you just squash everything down it makes it more streamlined, right?!

Dress: c/o F&F, shoes: Office
Despite that though, once you get the dress on I do really like it. The colour is great and I love shift dresses, especially for work. I have reordered the dress in the next size up and I know that it will get a lot of wear at work when I have important meetings (you can't go wrong with fitted dresses!) Hopefully sizing up will give me a bit more wriggle room ;)

A better look at the colour- I really love forest green, especially in the Autumn! Whilst the fit of this dress was completely bizarre and I'm not entirely convinced by the 'magic' layer, I really like the colour and I can't wait for my replacement frock to arrive!

Me and my (Zaggora) Hotpants...

I never thought that there would be more than one post of me dressed in exercise gear on this blog but strangely enough I have been enjoying exercising (when I can motivate my sorry self to go for a run or head into the gym!) Since this first post I have expanded my collection of exercise gear and this purple and orange top is a suitably jazzy addition to my wardrobe. It is a pretty weird shape but is really comfortable and most importantly it doesn't ride up when I'm exercising - there's nothing worse than constantly having to hoick stuff up or down!

Top: Adidas,  Hotpants: c/o Zaggora, socks: Adidas, trainers: c/o Sports Shoes
I really love the colours but the best part of this top has to be the pocket. I always struggle with where to put my insulin pump when I am exercising (I could take it off but I don't like to be without it completely as it makes me a bit nervous; yet so little exercise gear has pockets.) Nike, Adidas, Reebok, whoever, if you are listening, please make more clothes with pockets, diabetics everywhere would be thrilled!

When the lovely ladies at Zaggora offered to send me some of their iconic Hotpants (no, not like these!) I was super excited. I have wanted a pair since Sarah posted about them on Where Are My Knees back in 2011 but until now I have never been exercising regularly so it wasn't worth spending the money. I was pretty dubious about their claims and as someone who is always warm (I am known to friends and family as a human radiator!) I wasn't sure whether their "signature Celu-Lite heating fabric technology" was for me. Don't read on if you are about to eat or drink or are particularly squeamish as (TMI) these bad boys are seriously sweat inducing. The first time I wore these, I had to literally peel them off me afterwards. Weirdly when I was wearing them I didn't feel sweaty at all but afterwards was a whole different story! After wearing them a few times, I can confirm that despite the weird noise they make when I move (wetsuit-like material sure makes a funny old sound!) they are really comfortable and high enough in the waist for me not to feel self-conscious about my stomach - definitely my problem area!

What do you look for in exercise gear? Have you got any ideas on how I could tone my tummy?

Mint and silver...

It comes to something when even I, with my literal mountains of clothes, can't find anything suitable to wear in the summery weather. My work wardrobe isn't really summer appropriate and I have been finding it particularly difficult to get dressed each morning. I was recently contacted by a  lovely PR lady from Surfdome to see if I was interested in doing a review and when I saw just how much stuff they had on their site (hint: loads) I jumped at the chance. I have a real soft spot for stripy tops and I will never give up on my quest for the perfect Breton tee. This one was from Billabong - a brand I associate with willowy, blonde, tanned surfer girls (clearly not a category I fit into!) and I was surprised by how much I like it.

Waistcoat: Miss Selfridge, Billabong long sleeved top: c/o Surfdome, necklace: Primark, skirt: Principles via charity shop, shoes: c/o Matalan
This mint waistcoat is another of those items that I can't bring myself to get rid of. I definitely went through a 'boho' phase when I first started uni (think lots of chunky wooden layered necklaces) and I thought it would be the perfect match for the more relaxed style of top. I like the fact it also adds a bit of colour- I'm not very good at sticking to a strict monochrome palette! This paper-bag skirt is really difficult to photograph- it is a weird almost crepe-like material and has a strange sheen which the camera can't seem to pick up properly. It may be a pain to iron but it sure looks pretty!

This top definitely has that super relaxed, oversized fit in the body but the sleeves are ridiculously tight. At first I had trouble getting my arms into them but after a bit of wriggling, I managed to adjust them to be comfortable. I'm never convinced that batwing tops are that flattering on me but I will be playing with the proportions to see if I can make it work with skinny jeans or trousers.

How would you style a batwing top?

Bouclé, fur and lace...

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you will know that I love a good coat. I have one in nearly every colour under the sun but luckily there is always room for one more, especially one as lovely as this. I bought it from Topshop in the sale and although I can't see it online, my local branch had quite a few left in store. I love the sixties swing style of this and the fact that it makes me feel like Blair Waldorf is a massive bonus. Just FYI, if you are thinking of buying it, definitely size down, there is a lot of material!

Coat: Topshop, dress: Warehouse,  shoesStylist Click court shoes c/o Spartoo, tights:Falke c/o MyTights
I love love love the fact that this a bouclé coat trimmed with faux fur, it just makes me feel so darned glamorous, a very difficult thing to achieve when you are being attacked by gale force winds at every angle. Unfortunately my nail varnish let the side down by chipping every 5 minutes and looking downright awful, considering how much I loved the other shades in this Opi collection, I was really disappointed- sort it out Opi!

I picked this dress up when I was sale shopping after Christmas and I absolutely love it. Warehouse have some amazing clothes in at the moment and I loved everything about this dress from the length, to the cute collar detail and delicate lace sleeves, this is definitely a dress that is going to get a lot of wear...

MyTights sent me these gorgeous Falke tights to review and they were the perfect match for the dress. I have worked with MyTights before and they really are great, I had a seriously difficult time deciding which of the tights to review. Falke tights are wonderfully made and these are no exception, I can't wait to wear them to work, I think they will look great with a plain shift dress. I think the reason I love this outfit so much, is the mix of textures, there is something really quite glamourous about it...

What clothes make you feel glamourous? Did you pick up any bargains in the sale?

ghd style & protect gift set...

As I said the other day, I don't straighten my hair that often mainly because I hate how damaged it can leave it. I rarely use heat on my hair at all but since I had such a positive reaction I will definitely be trying it again soon. I was sent a style and protect set by ghd to review and I have to say that knowing I can protect my hair from the worse of the heat makes me feel a lot less guilty about straightening it!

Get your ghd hair products online here
The set includes a huge paddle brush, some clips to section your hair (a necessity when you have as much hair as me!) the 'Straight and Smooth Spray' and the 'Final Shine Spray' which both smell amazing...

You only get 120 ml in the 'Straight and Smooth Spray' and 100 ml of the 'Final Shine Spray' but judging by the amount I needed when I did my hair here, this should last me for a while. I hadn't tried any ghd products before this but you have to admit, those guys know their hairstyling!

How do you keep your 'do looking glossy? Have you tried any ghd hair products before?

Take one collarless coat...

When Simply Be first got in contact, I wasn't sure what to think. Although I have put some weight on recently (hello sedentary job!) I am still a size 14 and I wouldn't consider myself plus sized. Potentially controversial topic aside, I was pleasantly surprised by the choice of clothes on offer and actually found it very difficult to narrow down my choices. In the end I went for this coat as anyone who knows me, knows that I have quite the soft spot for coats and I thought it would be nice to try a slightly different style.

Coat: c/o Simply Be, shirt: vintage, jumper: Zara via charity shop, shorts: New Look, tights: Tesco, shoes: New Look
In theory I should love it. The colour is just perfect and it is lovely and warm but I think the design of the coat just looks all wrong on me. I don't think I have a long enough neck to pull off a collarless style and buttoned up is the only way of wearing it without looking completely shapeless.

Even my usual trick of belting it didn't seem to work :( I am determined not to give up on it though as it is so well made and I really love the colour, I just need some styling tips...

Squinty face: model's own...
I felt slightly like I was wearing a school uniform with this jumper (maybe due to the scratchy navy wool?!) but I certainly never had such a cute spotty shirt for school. I wore this outfit to my first car boot the other weekend and felt slightly twee but oh so warm...

Have you ever shopped on Simply Be? How would you style a collarless coat?

Introducing...#AussieShineMonday

So you may have heard a few whispers already but Aussie are introducing a new range designed to maximise the shine in your aussome 'do, filled with Australian Ginseng extract and Pearl powder. The best bit about these though is definitely the smell. Who wouldn't want their hair to smell like 'cotton candy'?! Even the classic 3 minute miracle has been given a makeover...

A basket filled with Aussie goodies? Yes please!

Yes, that is an Aussie bathrobe...

The lovely Eugene did my hair for me again and I absolutely LOVED the style. I had a thick braid coiled around my forehead, another around the back of my head with the rest of my hair curled and loosely pinned, I only wish I had been going out afterwards as this hair was hot to trot!

Unfortunately my hair styling skills leave a lot to be desired but Eugene has inspired me to be a bit more adventurous with my hair, definitely something to try when I go out for my birthday!

How do you add shine to your hair? Will you be trying the new Aussie range?*

*of course you will!

P.S. Check out Lizzie and Lily's posts too, they have some amazing pictures from the day...
P.P.S. Aussie gave me these items for review but you know how much I love their products already!

Liz Earle Healthy Glow Powder Blush & Liz Earle Natural Glow Bronzer...

Hello lovely Frills and Spills readers!  I’m Lauren from www.laurenlovesblog.co.uk and I love to write about makeup, fashion, hair and crimes of fashion!

I love Liz Earle skincare, it’s perfect for my super-sensitive skin, so like most other bloggers I was so excited to hear they have a new makeup range. Here are my reviews of two products, the Healthy Glow Powder Blush and the Natural Glow Bronzer.

Liz Earle Healthy Glow Powder Blush

The colour I am reviewing is called Peony and it’s a lovely raspberry pink which is great for darker skin tones, but I think it looks lovely on pale skin tones too, a great all-rounder.

The packaging is very sleek and minimalist, a deep blue compact which has subtle glitter in, and the top features a small mirror which is handy for if you’re travelling and haven’t got anything to look in.

The powder is super-soft and very finely milled

Top stripe – applied with blusher brush, Bottom stripe – applied with finger
And gives huge colour payoff

This means the colour is very strong if it isn’t carefully applied, but once you get used to it, it gives a lovely healthy flush and is easily spread out.  Overall, although I am a high-street make-up lover and wouldn’t normally dream of paying £16.50 for a blusher, I admit that I don’t want to give this blusher up!

Product – 8.5/10. Score could be improved if the price was cheaper!

Liz Earle Natural Glow Bronzer
Being the pale person I am, in the summer I love bronzer! However I really hate those ones with flecks of glitter in, you know the ones that make you look like some sort of crazed disco chick who got lost in an office. Another draw-back of the ones without glitter in though are that they can leave your skin looking “muddy” and dirty (not sure why...) so I tend to use Benefit’s Hoola

This bronzer by Liz Earle is a very fine pressed powder which doesn’t look very dark compared to many other bronzers but don’t let that deceive you.

Again, the compact is a sleek blue sheen with a mirror. It’s bigger than the blusher and perfect for popping in your handbag for after work touch-ups. Actually, it would probably be quite hard to tell your products apart if you owned lots of Liz Earle makeup!

The powder is again a lovely texture but spreads very well. The colour payoff is very pale however, but is easily built up.

You can’t see it spread out ,but you can barely see a line created with my finger at the bottom. However with a build up and a good kabuki brush it gives a lovely colour!

Bronzer applied to right hand side of the photo
You can see it gives a lovely natural colour, but this is about 4 layers to demonstrate the colour! It’s perfect for very pale girls or people who want a subtle wash of colour. I absolutely love it, I don’t look muddy or dirty, but have a healthy “week in Spain” glow. It’s brilliant for sensitive skinned girls like me who don’t want to put fake tan on their faces in case we get spots! The bronzer is cheaper than Benefit Hoola at £19.50 and I would definitely purchase this again. It’s potentially a pale girl’s perfect bronzer!

Rating – 9.5/10 – I don’t feel I could give a 10, because one day there might be something better... but until then this is amazing!

Hope you enjoyed my reviews, pop on over to my blog for more!
