Drapery and denim...

I used to spend a lot of time stalking my local charity shops hunting out bargains and my final year at uni was a goldmine for bargains. Seriously, if you are anywhere near Kenilworth, go and have a rummage, the shops there have the nicest stock!  Tewkesbury also has some awesome ones and I picked this top up a few weeks before Christmas but it has been hanging unworn in my wardrobe. I really love the colour but I wasn't sure how to style it. I have a couple of white and striped draped tops from H&M already but the colour of this one makes it much more difficult to  wear- at least in my head. I originally planned to wear this with either a patterned skirt or blazer but the colour was statement enough by itself.

Blazer: New Look, top: Jasper Conran via charity shop, jeans: Topshop, shoes: Marks and Spencer
Now I have worn it once, the fear is gone and I will be wearing this a lot over the summer. I knew this top reminded me of something- this coral dress from H&M! The colour is a lot brighter but it is the perfect colour for summer, I'm just imagining it with turquoise jewellery... Drapery is one of my favourite details on clothing and I think it is super flattering too, especially if it has some clever gathering like this one does!

I am still on the hunt for some new jeans- I love the stretch of these but hoicking them up has been driving me mad recently. Does anyone have any recommendations for indigo high-waisted jeans? I am at my wits end now! I dug out this owl necklace to add a bit of interest too, I have had it for years and it is one of my favourite pieces of jewellery, owl themed or otherwise!

What details do you look for with clothes?

Teal...

Teal is a colour I really love and it is moving from my soft furnishings into my wardrobe . This blazer was from Matilda (I love having a friend who is a similar size to me!) and it has quickly become a firm favourite in my wardrobe. Imagine my excitement then when I realised it matched my teal suede shoes, you really can't beat a bit of matchy-matchiness! Jeans and a stripy tee probably wasn't the most exciting way to wear this blazer (I am imagining it will look awesome with my Hawaiian print dress) but it was the perfect way to jazz up a Wednesday! I'm not quite sure what is happening with my face in this picture but I promise I was a lot more enthusiastic about this outfit than I look here...

Blazer: from Matilda, top: H&M, jeans: Topshop, shoes: Marks & Spencer
I love the three-quarter length sleeves and the material was really comfy. Usually I end up taking off my jacket as soon as I get into the office but this lasted until after lunch- a new personal best for me!

When I first got these jeans I loved them but I haven't been so impressed recently. The inside seam on the left leg has unravelled and I constantly have to hoick them up. I'm not sure if it is because I sized up when I bought them, the fact that I have lost some weight recently (whoo!) or because they are quite stretchy but they don't fit properly and they have been driving me mad! I did buy a new pair of jeans in the ASOS sale and I am loving them so far but I want some that are less stretchy and more denim-y- any recommendations?

These shoes are one of my favourite pairs, the colour is really bright and as they are from M&S, they are ridiculously comfortable too! I think the straps make them really unusual and they always get a load of comments when I wear them. I really should wear them more but until now I never had anything to match them with, hopefully you will be seeing a lot more of these on the old blog over the next few months!

What colours have you been wearing recently?

Oversized stripes...

I think it's a bit of a blogger cliché but my wardrobe is full of striped tops. This Mango jumper was a bit of an impulse buy but I couldn't resist adding another striped jumper to my collection. It is surprisingly warm and perfect for the office, especially when paired with my snazzy blue blazer! I have been wearing a lot of monochrome outfits recently and it feels weird not wearing any colour so this blazer is ideal for brightening them up...

Blazer: c/o Matalan, jumper: Mango, jeans: Topshop, top: c/o Matalan, necklace: New Look, shoes: c/o Matalan

I really love this jumper but I'm never sure how to style it. The oversized fit isn't that flattering on me and I'm not sure what to pair it with to stop me looking so square. I wore it here with a loose t-shirt but maybe I need a more fitted top? It reminds me of this outfit in a lot of ways, maybe I just need to dig out more skinny trousers?

This necklace is the perfect finishing touch and I have been wearing it a lot recently. I really like the length and think I need to invest in some more statement necklaces, they are perfect for pairing with stripes!

I have had these Topshop jeans for a year or so now but they have really stretched after a few washes too many and I am on the lookout for a new pair. I have heard some good things about the Joni jeans but does anyone have any other recommendations for high-waisted jeans?

How would you style this oversized jumper?

Travel plans...

This year, I am trying to make good on my resolution to visit more places in the UK and I already have some exciting trips planned! I will be staying at the gorgeous Norbury Manor with some blogging pals, I have a spa and shopping weekend in Bath to look forward to, with my two best girlfriends, and I'll be flying up to Edinburgh to spend a few days with another two best friends. And just when I've got my breath back from all that excitement, Mark and I are road-tripping down to Cornwall for your summer holiday. Phew, it sounds like a lot when it is written down like that!

Now obviously I am so organised that every day is planned out to the minute... Yeah, that's a lie. I have never been to any of these places and I'm going to need some help with day trip suggestions. So, in an attempt to be more organised - another resolution for this year - I am asking you, nice and early on,  for suggestions of places to go, books to read, music to listen to on my hols.

What are your suggestions? Where are you visiting this year?

A review: EcoTools Bamboo 6 Piece Brush Set

I bought this brush kit after I left my blusher brush at home when I went to Mark's house. Normally I wouldn't mind but I had his work Christmas party to attend and I only had powder blushers with me. Cue a panicked purchase in Boots... I was so impressed by my purchase that I just had to share them with you! I apologise for the vague terms that I use, I'm not a beauty blogger but when I find something that works, I stick to it and sing its praises to anyone who will listen. Harriet wrote a post recently about her new favourite  make-up brush and that inspired me to share my favourites...

As it was only a small store they only had a couple of brushes to choose from and this 5 piece set worked out to be the cheapest. I hadn't really heard of Eco-Tools as a brand before but the fact that they are cruelty free and eco-conscious is a real bonus for me!

My new favourite blusher brush
I have always preferred fairly full blusher brushes and I love the fact that this one is slanted as I can apply products much more precisely than before whilst still giving a nice flush of colour. One sweep with this brush and you are done!

Clumpy eyelashes begone! There is nothing I hate more than clumpy eyelashes and along with the blusher brush, this is the one brush I reach for daily. I only wish the eyebrow brush was a little more rigid, my eyebrows need a firm brush to be tamed!

Eyeliner brush
Concealer brush
Eyeshadow brush
I am ashamed to say that I haven't actually used the other 3 brushes from the set as I don't actually know how to use them! I have always been a fan of applying my make-up with my [clean] hands and so the other brushes seem a bit pointless to me but I would love to hear your recommendations on how to use them or any YouTube gurus that I simply have to follow!

Have you got any Eco-Tools brushes? How do you apply your make-up?

Fee Fyfo Fum...

When I was contacted by Fyfo to review a pair of shoes, I wasn't sure. I have never felt a craving for  pink furry yeti boots [yes they are as hideous as they sound!] but when I saw these lovely Rocketdog boots I had to say yes! They remind me of something my gorgeous wifey Laura would wear and despite the heel, they are actually fairly comfortable.

Dress: NW3 from Hobbs, tights: ASDA, belt: Primark, boots:c/o FYFO
The one issue I had with these shoes was the fact that they came so high up my leg, I felt that wearing them with black tights would ensure that my legs didn't look quite so stumpy but I'm not sure whether it has worked or not!

At first I didn't like the ruffles on the side but I actually think they are necessary to break up the tweed a little...

Spot the ladybird...
I love the different colours that are woven through the tweed, perfect for picking up the colour of your accessories!

 A very chunky heel!

A better view of the heels...
I really like these boots but I am unsure about how to wear them without having to resort to black tights or short short skirts... any suggestions? My shoes arrived very quickly and although there were some very questionable shoes on there, I was impressed by the variety of choice on the website!

Would you wear tweed boots? How would you style these differently?

Aussie virtual styling class... (PICTURE HEAVY)

On Wednesday night, myself and other Aussie Angels had a virtual styling class with the wonderful stylist Eugene with the opportunity to ask questions as the session progressed. I was unsure how well this would work but I actually really enjoyed it and it was good to see how the hairstyle could be adapted to suit different hair types. The style I was attempting to follow was a textured side plait and I took pictures as the class progressed . Please excuse blurry pictures/gormless expressions...

MAJOR hair envy. Picture c/o Aussie.

Au naturel hair after a day at work...

I decided to brush out my curls (a very rare occurrence!) in order to make my hair a bit easier to work with.

Newly smooth waves!

Aussie curl defining and shine mousse. I have always been a bit wary of using mousse, memories of crispy haired girls at school always put me off but this smells amazing (like all Aussie products) and actually sank into my hair nicely...

WHAT.A.GORM.
The amount I used for my hair.

Softly defined curls...

A quick spritz with the Hi-Hold, Hi-Shine hairspray to keep the curls in place... I HATE the smell of hairspray so the smell of this (kind of fruity?)  is a welcome change from the usual synthertic smell and it manages to tame my unruly mane...win win!

Sweep your curls over to one side...

Plait your hair into a chunky side braid...

Secure with a bobby pin...

Despair at the amount of hair that has fallen out on the one side...

There was plenty of texture in this bad boy!

Twist it up and pin it underneath for an interesting textured bun.

TA-DA!

I loved the idea of the styling session and I found it very easy to follow even if the finished product didn't look half as good. Thank you Aussie for another fab event for us Angels to try!

Would you wear a chunky braid? How do you style your hair?

Maria's party essentials: the playsuit...

Around this time of year everyone ends up with more social events to attend than the rest of the year added together [well I do at least!] and it can be difficult to find enough outfits to wear without going out and spending a fortune. Hopefully this mini-series of posts will give you some inspiration on how to revamp your wardrobe for that festive feel!

Picture courtesy of Jazmine! L-R: Harriet, me, Kat and Amy :)
I first wore this playsuit to the Tabio blogger event and it is one of the easiest items to style up for an evening party. Just add some snazzy tights and a spot of blingy jewellery and you have an outfit that manages to be sexy without flashing too much flesh, always a win in my book!

Playsuit: My Yard, hold-ups: c/o MyTights, shoes: New Look
Luckily, the fact that this is a block colour allows for a lot of freedom with the accessories and I think this would look great with some leopard print or sequins too...

I think patterned hold-ups are even better than patterned tights! I think these would add an edge to an outfit without taking away from the gorgeous draped shape. My Yard have a gorgeous burgundy playsuit in at the moment which I think would look absolutely gorgeous layered up with chunky gold jewellery and a sheer black shirt.

A close up of the gorgeous patterned lace ( I love these Jonathon Aston hold ups for a similar look) I always associate lace with Christmas and party occasions but I am looking to the gorgeous Reena for some lace tights inspiration for everyday wear.

One of my favourite photos of me and Danni, just before we finished uni ♥ It just goes to prove how versatile the playsuit can be... Another party, the same playsuit! ;)

What are your party essentials? Do you own a playsuit?
