How to wear shorts for work...

For me, shorts are one of life's under-appreciated treasures. They are way more practical than a skirt but much more fun than a pair of trousers and finding a pair that were work appropriate has been on my mental shopping list for a long time now.  This navy pair were from my beloved NW3 by Hobbs and the length is perfect although I wish they sat higher on the waist as they just fall down on me. For work, I paired them with a plain blouse and simple accessories for a professional but relaxed look but I think these will also look awesome with my chunky knit tights and a jumper or two...

Sheer blouse: New Look, shorts: NW3 by Hobbs, camisole: M&S, belt: New Look, shoes: Clarks c/o Spartoo
Apologies for the badly lit photos too, leaving the house at 6 am in the winter definitely has its disadvantages!  I only realised recently, just how many sheer blouses I have and I am trying to wear them as much as possible, the sleeve length makes them more seasonally appropriate and yet they are light enough that I don't boil with the central heating at work. This camisole/slip from M&S is a real lifesaver, it is a half decent length unlike many that come underneath dresses (I'm looking at you Topshop!)

New level of matchy matchy on the lipstick and nails front too. I have far too many lipsticks that have been lying unworn for too long so I am rediscovering old favourites from my make-up bag. This shade is Ballistic (136) from good old Rimmel. I love a classic red lip and this is a really great every day colour.

My favourite nude fishnet tights (Accessorize are one of the few places on the high street to do decent  nude fishnets) and my lovely leopard print loafers added a much needed injection of print and I love how the leopard print looks against the cream.

A dainty little initial necklace from the Urban Outfitters sale a while ago which I absolutely love but rarely wear. I find daintier jewellery tends to get overshadowed by the chunkier necklaces I own which is a shame as it too nice to be hidden away!

How would you style these shorts? Any ideas on how to ease myself back into wearing lipstick again?

How to wear burgundy...

Every year certain colours come back around and burgundy/oxblood/berry/bordeaux,whatever you want to call it, is one that you can guarantee everyone will be wearing, come the winter months .  I must hold my hands up, I am a big fan of the colour and I seem to have acquired more than a few items in this gorgeous berry shade over the years...

Dress: Forever 21, belt: Primark, tights: John Lewis, shoes:Kurt Geiger, glasses: Gok Wan at Specsavers
I promised you a review of my (other) new glasses so here you go, these beauties from Gok Wan have become my 'everyday' specs as they are more subtle than my other pair and the slight Miss Moneypenny look to them works better in the office I feel ;) I'm still not used to my face with spectacles (any tips on how to get used to them would be much appreciated!) but Mark thinks they make me look older, what do you guys think?
Lipstick: Shade 107 in the Kate Moss matte lipstick range- the perfect berry lipstick
Here is your first look too at my gorgeous new handbag! Part birthday present and part reward to myself for my promotion, this baby is a 100% leather bag from Radley in a (you guessed it!) lovely shade of burgundy that is the perfect size for an everyday handbag.

The focus of the outfit for me though was this gorgeous pair of patent Mary Janes (a bargain at Swindon designer outlet a few weeks ago) They are the kind of shoes that make you do a jig of happiness whenever you catch a glimpse of them. They are surprisingly comfortable considering the height and even I managed a whole day in them- total success!

I love the fact that my tights match the colour of the shoes perfectly- hello optical illusion of having long(er) legs!
Even my drink matched! My first black forest hot chocolate of the year went down a treat before I headed to Zizzi's, talk about an indulgent afternoon!

Have you fallen for burgundy this Autumn? (har har) Any tips on how to get used to wearing glasses?

How to make fish pie...

Now I know it isn't for everyone but fish pie has to be one of my favourite dinners, it is (relatively) good for you and is definitely high on my list of comfort foods.  I made this one last weekend and deliberately made a huge one, Mark and I had a massive portion each and we have another 2 dinners (at least) in the freezer...

What to wear on holiday...

As you all know, summer in Italy is absolutely gorgeous, blazing sunshine and ridiculously hot, I don't think it dropped below 35 degrees until the very last day. I usually hate summer clothing, I never know what to wear when it is warm but I think I did a pretty good job of packing this time and I wanted to give my recommendations for what to wear...

Top: Gap, skirt: Kimchi Blue at Urban Outfitters, sunglasses: Accessorize
Shoes: Marks & Spencer
Patterned skirts/shorts and plain sleeveless tops- the pattern on this skirt incorporated a few colours making it extremely versatile and the light cotton of both the top and skirt was ideal for keeping me cool as I was sight-seeing. I have this Gap top in at least 5 colour-ways and the fit is second to none. I don't know what it is about these ones but they hold their shape after wearing and washing and the ribbed fabric is way more flattering than a plain style... I also had two amazing pairs of patterned shorts but I didn't get any pictures, I will have to dig them out again!

Draped top: H&M

High waisted shorts: Miss Selfridge, stripey top: Gap (as above!)
High waisted shorts and neutral colours - These high waisted shirts from Miss Selfridge proved to be a life-saver, the denim is super soft and stretchy, much like my favourite jeans and the higher waistline meant I could eat as much pizza and pasta as I wanted without feeling self conscious. The draped top from H&M also skimmed over any potential food babies whilst paying homage to the wonderful drapery on the local statues and the stripey top is exactly the same top from Gap but in a lovely pale stripe.

Top: Gap (as above) skirt: Pepe Jeans, shoes: Marks & Spencer (borrowed off my mum)
Dress: River Island via ASOS, floral belt: George at ASDA, sandals: Clarks via Spartoo

Dress: vintage via charity shop, sandals: Marks & Spencers (as above)
Midi length skirts and dresses- This gorgeous bright skirt has been with me on all of my trips to Italy, the length means that it is suitable for all sights, including the Vatican. Many places won't let you in unless you are dressed appropriately so a longer length skirt or dress is ideal as you just have to wrap a scarf around your shoulders to get in. This River Island dress I found so easy to wear as it is so light and also covers most of my legs, again ideal in the scorching heat. My favourite vintage dress also came along for the ride and again, the colour and cotton combination meant it was perfect for the sunshine.

Hard working accessories and well fitting shoes: I wore these sunglasses and this bag, every day when I was away. I love the slight cat-eye on the glasses and the bag was the perfect size for fitting in my diabetes essentials and the aforementioned scarf whilst being able to keep a tight grip on!.  also wore my two pairs of Keds (these and these) but typically I don't have any pictures of me wearing them! I cannot stress enough how important it is to have shoes that fit well and I will always love Clarks and Keds as they support my feet whilst still looking pretty, no mean feat, I think you will agree!

Mark doing his best fashion blogger pose
My photo pose has become a bit of a running joke with my friends both online and off and now Mark is trying to get in on the action, do you think he is fashion blogger ready?!

A nice natural photo of the two of us, I definitely need to get this printed off, I have so many photo frames to fill! As you can see I wore a lot of red on holiday (why deviate from a colour I love?!) and hopefully my holiday wardrobe isn't so wildly different to my normal one, just slightly more leg on show ;)

What do you wear on holiday? Do you have a signature pose?

P.S. This post was done in collaboration with Spartoo

Lilac dreams...

The light here in the morning is beautiful, it casts a peachy glow over everything but it never seems to translate in photographs. I'm sure if we played around with the settings on our camera we could capture it much better but as with most things, a lack of time is what puts me off! I would love to have a variety of interesting backdrops for these photos, but working full time and leaving ridiculously early in the morning leaves me with literally 5 minutes to get these photos and it leaves me genuinely wondering, how do other bloggers in full time work do it?! It is so frustrating as I love blogging and I obviously want my photos to be as good as they can be but real life doesn't leave much wriggle room at the moment!

Dress: H&M via charity shop, top: Warehouse via charity shop, jacket: Principles, belt: Topshop vintage, shoes:Office
In the spirit of full matchy matchy-ness I dug out one of my favourite blushers, Summer Rose by Mac and my pinky violet lipstain from Max Factor (I ruddy love those lipstains!)

I came up with the idea for this outfit after Warehouse had a lilac skirt and white top combination on the mannequins in their store when I visited a few months back. I was tempted to buy the skirt and recreate the look myself but remembered I had this H&M dress to try it with instead. This top is so versatile, I love wearing it and it looks equally good with jeans and  shorts as it at does with skirts and would definitely recommend getting a top with an interesting hemline!

Slowly trying to soften these shoes up, they are absolutely gorgeous but the leather is still very rigid, any ideas about how to soften them slightly? I want them to be as comfy as possible for when winter arrives again!

How do you make your photos as good as possible with very little time? Any ideas about how to soften my shoes up?

Aussie virtual styling class... (PICTURE HEAVY)

On Wednesday night, myself and other Aussie Angels had a virtual styling class with the wonderful stylist Eugene with the opportunity to ask questions as the session progressed. I was unsure how well this would work but I actually really enjoyed it and it was good to see how the hairstyle could be adapted to suit different hair types. The style I was attempting to follow was a textured side plait and I took pictures as the class progressed . Please excuse blurry pictures/gormless expressions...

MAJOR hair envy. Picture c/o Aussie.

Au naturel hair after a day at work...

I decided to brush out my curls (a very rare occurrence!) in order to make my hair a bit easier to work with.

Newly smooth waves!

Aussie curl defining and shine mousse. I have always been a bit wary of using mousse, memories of crispy haired girls at school always put me off but this smells amazing (like all Aussie products) and actually sank into my hair nicely...

WHAT.A.GORM.
The amount I used for my hair.

Softly defined curls...

A quick spritz with the Hi-Hold, Hi-Shine hairspray to keep the curls in place... I HATE the smell of hairspray so the smell of this (kind of fruity?)  is a welcome change from the usual synthertic smell and it manages to tame my unruly mane...win win!

Sweep your curls over to one side...

Plait your hair into a chunky side braid...

Secure with a bobby pin...

Despair at the amount of hair that has fallen out on the one side...

There was plenty of texture in this bad boy!

Twist it up and pin it underneath for an interesting textured bun.

TA-DA!

I loved the idea of the styling session and I found it very easy to follow even if the finished product didn't look half as good. Thank you Aussie for another fab event for us Angels to try!

Would you wear a chunky braid? How do you style your hair?

Maria's party essentials: the playsuit...

Around this time of year everyone ends up with more social events to attend than the rest of the year added together [well I do at least!] and it can be difficult to find enough outfits to wear without going out and spending a fortune. Hopefully this mini-series of posts will give you some inspiration on how to revamp your wardrobe for that festive feel!

Picture courtesy of Jazmine! L-R: Harriet, me, Kat and Amy :)
I first wore this playsuit to the Tabio blogger event and it is one of the easiest items to style up for an evening party. Just add some snazzy tights and a spot of blingy jewellery and you have an outfit that manages to be sexy without flashing too much flesh, always a win in my book!

Playsuit: My Yard, hold-ups: c/o MyTights, shoes: New Look
Luckily, the fact that this is a block colour allows for a lot of freedom with the accessories and I think this would look great with some leopard print or sequins too...

I think patterned hold-ups are even better than patterned tights! I think these would add an edge to an outfit without taking away from the gorgeous draped shape. My Yard have a gorgeous burgundy playsuit in at the moment which I think would look absolutely gorgeous layered up with chunky gold jewellery and a sheer black shirt.

A close up of the gorgeous patterned lace ( I love these Jonathon Aston hold ups for a similar look) I always associate lace with Christmas and party occasions but I am looking to the gorgeous Reena for some lace tights inspiration for everyday wear.

One of my favourite photos of me and Danni, just before we finished uni ♥ It just goes to prove how versatile the playsuit can be... Another party, the same playsuit! ;)

What are your party essentials? Do you own a playsuit?
