How to wear burgundy...

Every year certain colours come back around and burgundy/oxblood/berry/bordeaux,whatever you want to call it, is one that you can guarantee everyone will be wearing, come the winter months .  I must hold my hands up, I am a big fan of the colour and I seem to have acquired more than a few items in this gorgeous berry shade over the years...

Dress: Forever 21, belt: Primark, tights: John Lewis, shoes:Kurt Geiger, glasses: Gok Wan at Specsavers
I promised you a review of my (other) new glasses so here you go, these beauties from Gok Wan have become my 'everyday' specs as they are more subtle than my other pair and the slight Miss Moneypenny look to them works better in the office I feel ;) I'm still not used to my face with spectacles (any tips on how to get used to them would be much appreciated!) but Mark thinks they make me look older, what do you guys think?
Lipstick: Shade 107 in the Kate Moss matte lipstick range- the perfect berry lipstick
Here is your first look too at my gorgeous new handbag! Part birthday present and part reward to myself for my promotion, this baby is a 100% leather bag from Radley in a (you guessed it!) lovely shade of burgundy that is the perfect size for an everyday handbag.

The focus of the outfit for me though was this gorgeous pair of patent Mary Janes (a bargain at Swindon designer outlet a few weeks ago) They are the kind of shoes that make you do a jig of happiness whenever you catch a glimpse of them. They are surprisingly comfortable considering the height and even I managed a whole day in them- total success!

I love the fact that my tights match the colour of the shoes perfectly- hello optical illusion of having long(er) legs!
Even my drink matched! My first black forest hot chocolate of the year went down a treat before I headed to Zizzi's, talk about an indulgent afternoon!

Have you fallen for burgundy this Autumn? (har har) Any tips on how to get used to wearing glasses?

Cream lace and studded shoes...

Can you say cliché?! This outfit looks like every festival inspired look or 'ways to toughen up a pretty dress' post that you have ever read but oh well! My new boots arrived at the weekend and I couldn't have been happier. I have been looking for some black ankle boots for ages and these ones are lovely- the leather is so soft and the studs are very subtle and perfect for adding a bit of interest to a more practical shoe...

Dress: Forever 21, belt:ribbon, shoes: Betty London from Spartoo
I wore this dress to celebrate my Grandad's birthday and although it was perhaps a silly idea to wear a cream dress when eating curry, I did appreciate the elasticated waistline ;) A new photo location too, my grandparents really do have a beautiful garden...

I love the wooden heels on these boots, I do wish they were slighter higher but actually, being flat, they will be much more practical once the weather gets worse.

For now though, I will enjoy wearing impractical clothing in the last of the sunshine...
OH HAI beautiful new ankle boots!
I would never have usually chosen boots like this in the past but recently I have found myself drawn to things that are slightly edgier than I would usually pick and these boots are a perfect example of how my style has changed since I started blogging.

How has your style changed? Have you been making the most of the sunshine?
P.S. This post was done in collaboration with Spartoo

"Look at you with your red shoes!"

Thank you Mr. Drunk Man, I hadn't noticed what I was wearing until you said! This dress is my favourite thing to wear at the moment, I picked it up for £1 (!) off our clothes rail at my work's summer BBQ and I couldn't be happier.   I have always wanted to try a clothes swap and this really worked as loads of people brought in clothes for me and my colleague Matilda, to sell and we managed to raise £20 for  our nominated charity (not bad considering everything was £1!)

Dress: Isabella Oliver (clothes swap), blazer: New Look, belt: vintage, shoes: Accessorize
I love the length and monochrome stripes will always look good, I can't wait to layer it up this autumn. I was very grateful of the little sleeves on this too, perfect for covering my slightly sunburnt shoulders (courtesy of the aforementioned BBQ) and much more professional too...

This dress is pretty similar, and it's in the sale!
A slightly better and less strobey look at the stripes, they made me feel very French, I felt like I should be carrying a string of onions around with me! Also wearing my current favourite combination of accessories...

A slight outtake but a better look at my make up and hair, I'm still loving this red lipstain, especially now the weather has gone gloomy again!

Have you ever tried a clothes swap? What are your favourite accessories?

Schoolgirl chic?

This skirt is one of those pieces that never seems to photograph very well, which is a real shame as it is really lovely in real life. With the loafers and the blouse I got a real school girl vibe from this, especially with the plait! I really liked this outfit and it was perfect for a lazy weekend not doing very much... Originally I was going to pair this with my tweedy blazer but it looked far too 'rah' so I thought my coat would be a safer option ;)

Coat: Dannimac, blouse: Topshop, skirt: ASOS, loafers:Office, belt: vintage, bag: charity shop
Without the coat I looked even younger but sometimes looking young is no bad thing right? I'll be glad of it when I'm 50!

After our Aussie tutorial I couldn't wait to try this hairstyle again and I added a bit more volume at the roots with my trusty Aussie hairspray...

I think these loafers worked much better with this outfit than the last one I paired them with, the chunkiness of the shoe gave me a bit of height without making my skirt look too short... I know I always seem to be going on about the length of my skirts and dresses but I hate that feeling of risk when you wear a short skirt. When you're as clumsy as I am, the risk of exposure and the subsequent loss of dignity is much higher...

You have to love ugly shoes...
My favourite sunglasses, still going strong almost a year later. This is something of a miracle as I always just chuck them into my bag, drop them on the floor or leave them in my pocket when I sit down so the fact that they are still intact is testament to Accessorize's engineering!

Would you dress like a schoolgirl? Do you like 'ugly shoes'?

Checkmate!

I have been quite absent from the blogosphere again this weekend as I have had a busy time catching up with Mark and my (rather large!) extended family It was so nice to see everyone and we had a big family meal with lots of yummy food...I don't think there's anything better to do in the sunshine!  :)

As you well know, I take any excuse to dress up and I pulled out my beloved 'picnic dress'. I don't know quite how it got its name but it is an old favourite of mine that I don't wear nearly enough. It has seen me through numerous family meals, parties with friends and those days where you don't have anything that looks right on.

Dress: Monsoon, wedges: Jones Bootmaker via charity shop
The dress is a gorgeous 50s style shape and in a gorgeous heavy linen, making it perfect for the sunny weather we have been having recently. I wore these wedges, which I picked up for next to nothing in a charity shop last year, to give me a bit of height with the midi-length. It is perfect for swooshing around and I always feel quite elegant when I wear it.  My hair was actually co-operating so I left that down and kept my make up fairly simple to leave the focus on the dress.

Cue cheesy couple photo! I always realise how much I miss Mark during the holidays as we don't tend to see each other very often due to where we live. I am such a sap but I really do love him ♥ Luckily both of our families like each other and Mark is willing to spend time with my feral siblings lovely family ;)

I mean who wouldn't love a face like that?!

I have been experimenting more with liquid eyeliner recently but I haven't yet found one which I have fallen in love with. The No. 7 Amazing Eyes Liner is nice but doesn't seem to stay on all day whereas the Rimmel one I am wearing here has the most rubbish brush in the world! I guess my quest to find the perfect idiot-proof liquid eyeliner continues...

Do you have clothes that you can rely on whatever the occasion? What liquid eyeliner would you recommend?

Why do you blog?

I made the decision to link my blog to my Facebook almost as soon as I started blogging as I thought it would help increase awareness and drive traffic but whenever people find out that I have a blog, they invariably ask "Why do you blog?" and I am always caught off guard and fail to give a good answer. For those who don't blog, sharing so much of your life online is a scary thought and for many, it is seen as self-obsessed and narcissistic. I mean why would anyone want to look at pictures of you showing off a dress or a new pair of shoes?

I read blogs before I wrote one and as many people did, I thought "I could do that too!" and so decided to set up Frills 'n' Spills with Danni. When I first started writing, it was scary but I soon found that the blog became my creative outlet. It wasn't just an online diary (no-one wants to read about arguments I have with my siblings :P) but rather a journal of experiences. It meant that I was able to catalogue the highs and lows of university, moving away from home and generally finding out a bit more about myself in the process.

As cliché as this may sound, blogs and blogging are such an inspiration for me. I have been inspired to wear clothes which I would never have dared to even consider before and to conquer my fear of standing out and looking different. This little blog has inspired me to be more confident, dress better and (hopefully!) improve my writing and photography skills at the same time.  I like the fact that I can see a Topshop dress on another blogger with a similar shaped figure or a lipstick on another pale person and see whether it is likely to suit me. I'm not a 5'11" willowy blonde (my childhood ideal!) but I'm OK with that, blogs provide me with the inspiration to learn to accept this fact. I'm not gonna lie, there are days where I just want to chop all of my hair off or somehow stretch my legs out a bit more but 90% of the time I am happy with the way I look.  I'm sure that getting older also plays a part but blogging has encouraged me to expand my horizons and to grow in confidence, no bad thing surely?

The blogging community is the best part of blogging for me and I have met some really amazing people through it. The support and feedback I received when I posted about my struggle with depression simply blew me away. I have had millions of inane questions answered, clothing items tracked down and support in both the good and bad times. What more could you ask for? I genuinely thought that due to the sheer number of females involved in blogging, people would be catty and mean and I have been lucky enough to be proven wrong. Anyone I have ever met has been really lovely and I have never met a blogger who doesn't reply to an email or a tweet. I think Twitter really helps with getting to know the person behind the blog better and I know that I am an addict! Blogging obviously has it's ups and downs (see Jen's posts HERE for an informed and  insightful take on some common blog issues) but I have never regretted my decision to start a blog and I hope I will be able to blog for a long time yet! :)

Why do you blog? Do your friends and family know about your blog?

EDIT: I meant to include Bee's post about Blogging vs. Real Life as she covers this topic much better than I do! I think feelings like this pop up fairly often if you're a blogger so it's worth sharing :D

Self sufficiency

This week, at the jumble sale I picked up a little trinket  and then promptly forgot about it. It's a little beach hut with a hook that was (once) attached, perfect for hanging up my dressing gown (oh the glamourous lives of fashion bloggers!)  I was determined to fix it and so I  pulled out probably the most functional thing I own; a pink flowery hammer whose handle unscrews to reveal a wealth of screwdrivers. This bad boy was bought for me a long time ago by my friend Mike. Whilst it may look 'girly' and even ineffectual, this little baby has proven its worth many times over. A little bit of ribbon and a few drawing pins later et voila! one hook ready to use :)

Whilst I'm sure that you are enjoying my exceedingly dull exciting D.I.Y adventure, this little project  got me thinking. How often do I pass over things that I could do because it would be easier to not add another little project to my growing workload? I am able to do these things and yet I let someone else do them or let them pass me by all together. I may not be able to wrestle a bear (yet) but I am more than capable of taking care of myself and I think I forget this sometimes. It's easy to hide behind my gender or my relationships with others but I am defined by more than just my chromosomes or who my partner or friends are.

Yes, I'm THAT cool...
Whilst this is very rambly, I guess I am trying to say that the past few years have helped shape me and to find out exactly who Maria is. I don't know everything yet but I know she likes bright colours, nice clothes, good food and a cheeky cocktail (or two!) with friends. Blogging has inevitably been a part of this; the blogosphere has always been full of support and love [cue violins] and I have made some amazing friends. I think I have realised though that I CAN do things which I never thought possible and that it's even OK to worry, but that at the end of the day it's better to try surely? I could trot out even more clichés at this point (if you at first don't succeed... etc. etc.) but you aren't stupid and nor am I. I can survive anything that is thrown at me and what doesn't kill me, makes me stronger, right? (Sorry, I couldn't resist! :P)

I have always thought that I was worried about being alone but I think it was actually worry about being left behind. I am fiercely competitive and whilst this can be a problem, I maintain that having a 'killer instinct' is a useful life tool (it's definitely NOT  just about "taking part"when playing board games!) As I get older though, I realise that it's better to be happy, whether alone or with other people.  I love my friends and family but I am able to be self-sufficient too which gives me a LOT more confidence as I prepare to enter the big bad world post university.

Do you feel more confident as you get older? What's your biggest fear?
