World diabetes day...

I know this is a bit of a heavy topic but diabetes is something I am really passionate about. I have written about diabetes on the blog before but I thought that 'World Diabetes Day' was as good a time as any to share this. I originally wrote this article for the Elle writing competition back in August but as I never heard back from them I thought it may be interesting to share it here.

I was seven when it happened. I left the doctors surgery with a feeling of dread but without truly knowing what it would mean. On 5th August 1997 I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and nothing was ever the same again. Now I realise this all sounds completely over-dramatic, I mean there are people in much worse states all over the world, but adjusting to being diabetic has been an ongoing process and has led to more than a few ups and downs over the years. To be honest, I don’t know how my parents coped. I am the oldest of five children and my youngest brother had been born only a couple of weeks before, yet my parents (and my mother especially) just took it in their stride. For the first few years after diagnosis I refused to tell anyone, including my friends at school, because I felt that if I ignored it then it would disappear. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case at all and I was in hospital more often than I was in school. A yoyo is a fitting metaphor for me and my diabetes; I have swung from high to low (quite literally with my blood sugars!) over the years and at one point I was given only a few months to live if I continued at the same rate. After some horrific teenage years where I refused to take my injections, again thinking that denial would be the best policy, I realised the horrific impact I was having on both my body and my family. I also suffered from low self esteem and depression for a long time and I think this is a direct result of these actions. It wasn’t fair to keep putting my family through this, so I really tried to get it all under control but once again my body wasn’t co-operating. When I was 15 I had 50% attendance at school due to my hospital stays and my diabetes was spiralling out of control, despite the 4 injections I was taking every day. It is no joke to say that I felt like a pincushion for most of my teens... luckily this ensured that I would never ever try drugs as I failed to comprehend why people would choose to stick needles into their body. I’m sure this is one thing that my parents are grateful for!

Just before I took my GCSEs I started insulin pump therapy and started dating my current boyfriend Mark, two other huge milestones in my life. The insulin pump meant that I was able to fulfil my potential at school and eventually college and the support of my boyfriend has ensured that I never gave up on my dream to go to university. My parents weren’t keen, after all everyone has heard the horror stories about the binge drinking and wild parties that go on at uni and diabetes has never coped well with either . Determination, and more than a hint of stubbornness, meant that I started at the University of Warwick in 2008 and I can honestly say that they were the best three years of my life. Of course it was difficult, I didn’t have the safety net of my family and I actually missed my first week because my diabetes decided to play up the night before I was due to move into halls. Luckily though, Mark ended up at the same uni and this reassured my parents that I wasn’t going to be completely thrown in at the deep end. University taught me a lot of things but most importantly it taught me that I can do anything I want to.

For years, my diabetes seemed like a punishment; who was going to want to employ someone who wasn’t always capable of looking after themselves? Who would want to date someone who has ‘hypolipotrophy’ or as I fondly named it, a ‘salami sausage’ ring around their stomach as a result of insulin injections? Who would want to be friends with someone who has to be more careful when going out, who may have to leave the party early to go home? The answer is lots of people. I have been lucky enough to have amazing family, friends and workmates. My diabetes is not the thing people remember me for but rather my love of floral dresses and bright colours, cheesy pop music and yummy food. Being a diabetic has made me stronger, more determined to succeed and made me appreciate the ‘smaller things’ in life. It also means that I am completely unfazed by hospitals or anything involving needles. Once you have spent hours waiting around for hospital appointments, any fear you may have is quickly replaced with boredom. I still don’t have my diabetes completely under control but I am trying and surely that’s the most important thing. My diabetes has shaped me but it doesn't define me and I wear my ‘salami sausage’ as a trophy, proof that things can get better and that it doesn't have to be the end of your plans. I graduated from university, I have a wonderful boyfriend, lovely family and amazing friends. I am also diabetic and living proof that there is no such thing as a lost cause. A lot of things have changed since 1997, and I for one, am glad.

What has made you the person you are today?

P.S. If you have any questions then I will be more than happy to answer them !

This week has been...bittersweet

L-R: James, Lisa, Mark, me, Harry and Danni
This week I finally finished my exams and I don't think it has quite sunk in yet. I haven't been quite as ecstatic as I was last year but I think that is because it is all happening for the last time. Saying goodbye to my housemates has been absolutely heartbreaking, especially as I have had such an amazing time this year with some really brilliant people. I really hate saying goodbye and I really can't believe that these three years have gone by so quickly and I'm not ready to let it all go yet.

Luckily there are a couple of us still around and we have been making the most of our freedom with lots of yummy food and plenty of Pimms.. there really is nothing better in the sunshine! I am planning to spend a lot of time in the park picnicking too, a cheap way to have fun and use up all of the food from my fridge too :P
You may have seen my tweet about finding a grey bag and let me tell you, it was next to impossible. I have a pair of grey shoes that go with pretty much everything and have never found a bag to match them until now! After a morning traipsing around Leamington,  I finally managed to track down this beauty in Miss Selfridge. It is the perfect size and can be used for day or night so I am really pleased with it! I am hoping to wear this for the Aussie party next Saturday, are any of you going?

(♥)
I also managed to meet up with SarahHannah and  Hannah's friend for coffee today and it was lovely to see them again, even if we still didn't take any photos! I have been slowly working my way through Sex and the City too, as the episodes are only half an hour or so I can watch quite a few a day! That and The Sims 3 have been taking up my time recently, perfect for relaxing on the sofa with!

How do you cope with saying goodbye? What is the best way to relax?

P.S. Are any of you going to the Aussie party? What are you wearing?

Kenilworth Festival...another family fun day...

It seems to becoming a housemate family tradition to do something every Sunday and this last week we went to the Kenilworth festival which is held every year in the town where we live. This year they had live music, various stalls and (my personal favourite) the farmer's market filled with gorgeous French, Italian and German food.

This reminded me of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, it even had all the props!

I think this was the "up and coming band This Modern Youth" but I couldn't see a name anywhere so after a little detective work on the festival website, and a checking of photos to see what the time was when we saw them I am guessing that this was who it was! (Please correct me if I'm wrong though!) I loved the couple of songs I heard and they have a bright future ahead of them by the sounds of things :)

A Nutella and cherry crepe, cooked fresh on a little stall. Seriously it was the messiest but yummiest treat ever. If I ever go to France I am going to eat gazillions of these yummy treats!

We visited  the park where it was held and managed to see our favourite little ducklings again...aren't they just the cutest?!

Olives and garlic galore...absolute heaven!

You can't really say no to freshly baked bread either! These baguettes smelt amazing and I almost cried when I walked away empty handed from this stall!

I comforted myself with the cheese stall though. I promise you, smoked cheese on toast can make anything better, even revision blues...

This soap stall smelt absolutely divine and I ended up buying rose, peach and hazelnut [it smells like Nutella!] flavoured soaps which smell so divine. They are currently on my shelf wrapped in a bag but I can still smell them from my desk, I can't wait to try them out properly...

Lovely bundles of lavender too...these smelt amazing!

Everyone loves sausages, right? I didn't get anything from here either but the chorizo smelt amazing!

A giant profiterole with a mini one on top? Go on then!

A lovely selection of dried nuts which again looked amazing! It was lovely to go to a festival where there were so many local people, of all ages, and we really had a lot of fun. I could have ended up spending a lot more money too, but in the end I restricted myself to a few choice purchases. I liked the fact that there was live music too, I think it was a lovely opportunity for local artists and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Do you ever go to local festivals? What would you have bought?

This week has been... full of housemate fun!

You know it has been a good week when you have a tin full of cakes (Amaretto cakes and cherry and chocolate) and a heart shaped chocolate biscuit cake in the fridge. Occasionly  I get the urge to bake [usually if I'm hungry!] and after scrolling through the recipes on here, I found this recipe which Danni posted back in November. Luckily I had the ingredients and it was the perfect pick-me-up after uni deadlines and exams. Seriously, this cake is a hug covered in chocolate...

Heart shaped mould c/o Laura
I am sure that all of you know the gorgeous Laura of A Daisychain Dream and know that she is as lovely a person as you could wish to befriend. Unfortunately she has a very negative effect on my bank account as I can't help but feel that she would approve of  encourage purchases such as this gorgeous fork and spoon set from Paperchase ;)  Whilst it has a practical purpose, the cute print means that I have a smile on my face when I am eating my dinner, even if people wonder why I have a child's spoon set! :P

She also sent me a gorgeous personalised mug along with her letter and I LOVE IT! Apologies to all of those people who I still owe a letter; Lil, Claire and Chloe, I will do my best to send you your letters this week!

This week, in honour of my Aussie lighter life challenge, I have been to the gym with my housemate Lisa and Danni, Lisa and I have also done an exercise DVD. I always feel much more human if I have done some exercise and we have pledged to try and do something every day, even if it's just walking round the park together before watching The O.C. This Sunday, we decided to take a 'family walk' up to Kenilworth Castle and it was the nicest way I could have spent a Sunday and I came back totally relaxed. We wandered around the park, had a yummy milkshake at a local teashop and then went to coo over the cutest little ducklings ever. I was seriously in love!

L-R: James, Mark, me, Danni, Lisa
We also went out on Thursday night for a few drinks at a local bar and it was fab to just spend some time together outside of our house. I am seriously going to miss living here next year so I'm making the most of it whilst I still can :)  It is so nice to spend time with people I get on so well with and am lucky enough to live with so thank you guys <3

The obligatory outfit shot before we went out! Top: Marks & Spencers via charity shop, skirt: Zara, shoes: Primark, necklace: Topshop

How do you relax? Do you prefer to go out or do nothing on your weekends?

Purple picnic...

With the first rays of sunshine, it seemed only appropriate to break out the sleeveless dress and sunglasses and hit town for some shopping. Originally I planned to just return a dress I ordered off Dorothy Perkins but one thing led to another and I ended up with some lovely treats... I have a post to come on those! Leamington is so pretty in the sunshine and everyone seems much more smiley when there's no grey clouds looming on the horizon :) I'm still not convinced whether I like leopard print, maybe it's a grower?

Dress: H&M via charity shop, scarf (used as belt): via Laura, cardigan: Mango, shoeboots: Office, sunglasses: my brother, bag: Fiorelli (18th birthday gift) scarf: Primark
After having a mooch around for some goodies, Mark and I went for a little picnic in the parkwith our housemate James. It was so nice to just sit in the sunshine and feel its warmth, albeit briefly as it soon got cold, even with the blanket we put on the park bench! ;) We managed to get some Waitrose sandwiches for next to nothing so we munched those along with some reduced treats from Co-Op (can you tell that we are students?!)

It was really nice just to relax without having to set a deadline for when work had to start again! I can't wait till after the Easter holidays when it will be sunny all of the time [fingers crossed!] I even managed to match my yoghurt to my dress ;)

My photo poses clearly don't vary that much from picture to picture, haha! I am looking forward to finishing off the last of my work this week before heading home for a few weeks, I literally cannot wait to see my family again :)

What do you like best about the sunshine? Do you colour co-ordinate your food with your wardrobe?!
P.S. I am selling some clothes HERE so please take a look and help me pay off my overdraft!

American dream...

Today, as it was Danni's birthday, we visited our old favourite, Dockers (featured here and here) and went for brunch to celebrate :) I had the world's biggest breakfast which meant I was full from about 1pm till 7pm; a new record for me!!

The birthday girl herself :)
So unhealthy but it tastes so good! The little ball on the right is a homemade hash brown, so cute!! :D
Unfortunately, I was fooled by the weather forecast which promised sun and so I decided to wear a Topshop dress which I picked up a couple of years ago in a charity shop at home.
Dress: Topshop via charity shop, belt: H&M, shoes: Topshop, bag: Laura Ashley, stolen from my mum :)

I rarely wear this dress because I don't think it's that flattering as the dress has more of an empire line cut which can make me a bit shapeless but with a belt on I think it looks OK  :) I only ever wear it with tan accessories though, I need to be a bit more adventurous!

Worn with possible the softest shoes on the planet. I bought these in the Topshop sale on a bit of a whim and I really love them, perfect for stomping around a muddy park! Claire has these shoes in black and I really don't know which I prefer...luckily for my bank balance, my local Topshop only had the brown otherwise I would have probably ended up getting both!

Despite the cold weather, springtime is definitely just around the corner and I cannot wait for some sunshine and temperatures warm enough to just wear a cardigan rather than several layers. The Michelin Man should never be a style icon! I will be sad to pack away my coat though, I have worn it pretty much everyday since it popped through my letter-box :( Saying that, I'm sure the grey skies won't be going away too soon! [Yes, I AM talking about the weather, how British of me! :P] My coat is starting to go bobbly though, does anyone have any tips or tricks to fix bobbly clothes?

I will leave you with this rather rock 'n' roll picture of me with my idol, Elvis. We think he originally had a guitar but I think my air guitar makes a pretty great stand-in! ;)

How do you celebrate special occasions?  Are you excited for springtime?

Guess what, I'm not a robot...

I love when you find a bargain in a charity shop, it can really make my day and the fact that the money is going to a good cause makes me feel less guilty about spending it! I spotted this cute robot t-shirt hidden amongst some rather questionable jumpers, proof that having a rummage is always a good idea!

Top: New Look via charity shop, skirt: Dorothy Perkins, blazer: Tesco, socks: Marks and Spencers, shoeboots: Next, bag: c/o Fiona and Siren

I love all of the different robots, aren't they just gorgeous?! I felt quite a lot like a schoolgirl in this outfit, I think it was the grey blazer/sock combo?

I won this bag in a giveaway over at Fiona's wonderful blog and whilst it is not something I would ever choose for myself, I absolutely love it! It makes me feel a bit cooler (definitely no bad thing!) and adds a "delightfully tacky" element to my outfits. I really love some of the stuff on Siren's website, this gorgeous purple suede bag WILL be mine! :)

Also seen here with an outfit that I really loved but didn't photograph well; a gorgeous vintage green 'wiggle' dress and mulberry tights, leaving me looking like a cross between Joan Holloway and Laura! Not a bad combination AT.ALL.

Dress: vintage, tights: John Lewis, coat: c/o Tesco, shoes: Tesco, bag: New Look, belt: Primark

Back to the grind of essay and dissertation writing...luckily I have Danni and Lisa's birthdays to look forward to in the next few days :D I need to put on my dancing shoes and go and party! :D

Have you found any bargains recently?

P.S. Keep a look out for some exciting new features, coming soon! :D
