Casual summer stripes...

It's been a while since I posted about wearing a crop top but since February, I have been introducing more and more of them into my wardrobe. They are the ideal match to my high-waisted skirts and surprisingly comfortable if you can find a good one. I am a fan of H&M's selection, mainly because they have them in a comfortable stretchy jersey material- I may be feeling more confident but I still need some wiggle room! This River Island skirt could have been made for me, I love the bright red colour and it is so comfy to wear, even when the weather is roasting! The adjustable waist is also a real bonus, there's nothing worse than feeling trapped in your clothes when it is boiling. I am someone who always burns in the sun (I even managed to burn through factor 50 after 20 minutes in the park the other week!) so you will usually find me lurking in the shade during the summer... if you see me outside at all! This lack of time spent in the sun does mean that my skin can be almost translucent but I'm hoping to be rewarded with fewer wrinkles in the future...

Top: H&M, skirt: River Island, shoes: Matalan, necklace: Warehouse
You know that I am a stripes fiend so it was inevitable that I would end up adding this top to my collection. The soft ribbed cotton is ridiculously soft and comfy and was the perfect backdrop to this delicate gold necklace. I bought it a while back in the Warehouse sale but the chain was ridiculously short so I used the broken chain from an old necklace to lengthen it slightly. It may not be the prettiest solution but it works!

A better look at this dainty bracelet. I originally bought it for a friend's birthday present but it was too nice to give away so I bought her something else instead!

Maxis are perfect for the summer, they're covered up but keep you cool and they are super fun for swooshing around in. Shoes in the summer are always a bit of an odd one for me, I can't deal with stuff between my toes so I always opt for single strap sandals. This pair are getting a little bit shabby now but they are so comfy that I can't bear to throw them away. Here's hoping Matalan bring out a similar pair next year!

Are you a fan of crop tops? What do you wear to stay cool during the summer?

Palm prints...

Summer for me, is all about maxi dresses and pretty prints so when I saw this dress in H&M, I fell in love. (I may have also bought this one too, oops!) I would never usually go for such a muted colour scheme (bright colours are much more my speed!) but I couldn't resist this gorgeous leafy palm print and I can't wait to wear it all through the summer- wouldn't it look ace with these gold wedges? Even though I just wore this to run some errands at the weekend I felt so glam and it definitely put a smile back on my face. Things have been pretty stressful round here recently with illness and things with family and friends so I have been trying to stay upbeat and just escape from my head for a bit. I have also started doing Yoga with Adriene videos and so far I am loving it, it is a good way to relax, she is fun and not too hippy dippy for me (something that has put me off yoga in the past!)

Dress: H&M, shoes: Marks & Spencer
I even dug out some eyeshadow to wear with this outfit. I have a gorgeous eyeshadow compact with gold and olive shades in that were ideal for a daytime appropriate smoky eye. Another outing for this lovely neutral lip stain too, I promise I don't always wear bright colours! ;) This necklace is slightly lower than I would usually go for but it helps to break up the print a little and makes me feel sassy rather than schlumpy under so much material...

I love the waist tie that came with this too, I am never happy unless I can nip in my waist with a belt, I am worse than Gok Wan! I'm wearing Essie Russian Roulette again here, I seem to just switch between that and Essie's Spin the Bottle at the moment, I'm going to have to branch out soon...

This dress is pretty long but luckily most of my shoes have a little block heel so I was able to skip along quite happily when I wore my favourite rose gold heeled shoes- always a winner in my book!

Are you a fan of palm prints? How do you turn your brain off and unwind?

Lemon yellow maxi skirt....

It has been a while (nearly three years in fact!) since I last wore this skirt but the sunny weather a few weeks ago was the perfect opportunity to dig it out again. Yellow can be a bit of a difficult colour to wear but paired with white, it is much more wearable and this felt like a really fun and cheery outfit that really put a spring in my step. There's nothing like swooshing around in a maxi skirt to put a smile on your face! The skirt itself is pretty sheer, despite being lined, so I pulled out my trusty lace-trimmed cycle shorts to make it decent. I'm not sure quite why it is quite so see through but I thought I would rather be safe than sorry. The H&M shorts are notoriously hard to get hold of but I managed to find some in my local store so stocked up. I just wish I could get hold of a black pair too!

Cardigan: Tesco, top: Gap, necklace: New Look, skirt: New Look, sandals: Matalan
I'm not quite sure what happened with the lighting in these photos but I promise my make-up was the right shade in person! I have been mixing my Nars Orgasm illuminator with my beloved Dr Jart BB cream for a natural glowy finish recently and I really like it paired with a peachy lipstick (my favourite is the Max Factor Colour Elixir Lipstick in Pink Brandy, it is such a gorgeous shade and so easy to build up.

I love cropped cardis like this as they nip me in nicely at the waist and stop me from looking too shapeless. This thin cotton one is ideal for me as I can wear it over a vest top without feeling too warm- always a problem when you radiate heat! This necklace is one of my favourites and has the perfect colours to match my nails and make-up which is always a bonus!

These sandals were one of the best things I bought last year and they were the first shoes I thought of to pair with this outfit. This is a long skirt so the block heel added some much needed height and they were simple enough to not distract from the rest of the outfit. The nail polish I am wearing is the Max Factor mini nail varnish in Diva Coral and it is the perfect summery shade- you all know how much I love coral! ;)

Digital print maxi dress...

Now that summer is finally here to stay (fingers crossed!) I have been making the most of the sunshine and trying to wear my gorgeous new maxi dress as much as possible. This fiery orange beauty was a sneaky purchase from Monki last payday and I couldn't be happier with it. I ummed and aahed for ages between the dress and the skirt version in this print but I'm glad I went for the dress- much less faff when getting dressed in the morning as I don't have to find a top too ;)

Dress: Monki, belt: Primark, shoes: Nine West

I love how bright the colours are and the pixelly print is much more interesting than one of my many floral maxi dresses. It is definitely eye-catching and matched this skinny orange belt perfectly! (I love it when that happens!)

This is actually supposed to be a midi dress but as I am sadly lacking in willowy long legs, it is more like a maxi on me. I actually prefer it this length though, no stepping on the bottom of your dress and accidentally garroting yourself (ahem) and short enough to show off your shoes! As you can see, the lining for the skirt only reaches mid thigh but luckily it isn't too sheer without it ;)

These gorgeous tan peeptoe shoes are a summer staple and get pulled out every year, I don;t know what I am going to do when they finally give up the ghost! I have been scouring eBay but haven't had any luck so far...

Are you too mini for a maxi dress? Are any of your shoes irreplaceable?

Styling a maxi skirt for work...

I have said many times before that I am so grateful that I have a fairly casual dress code at work and there's not much that I can't wear (flesh flashing aside obviously!) As I leave so early in the morning, it can be difficult to judge what to wear for the day ahead as 5.30 am doesn't give you much to go on. Luckily a maxi skirt works whatever the weather, especially if it is in a slightly heavier material like this one. This beautiful maxi skirt doesn't get worn as often as I would like, because it really is voluminous but my trusty stripy top came out (it really works with maxi skirts!) and I think I managed to pull it off. What do you think? Apologies for my face in all of these pictures, I look super grumpy here for some reason!

Jacket: New Look, top: Oasis, skirt: Marks & Spencer, necklace: Miss Selfridge, shoes: Office, grumpy face: model's own.
To this day, this leather jacket is still one of my favourite ever purchases. I love the shape and fit of it and as it is leather, I just know it will stay a main part of my wardrobe for a long time. The fact I feel super cool when I'm wearing it also helps ;)

Simple accessories in neutral tones are essential when making a maxi skirt work-appropriate. Work (however relaxed it is) is not the time for wacky shoes or make-up!

Paint the town red...

...or what to wear out when the weather is rubbish! I never know what to wear when I go to the pub- I am always torn between going for extreme comfort (jeans and a jumper) and wanting to get slightly dressed up. Finding a balance can be tricky, especially if you have to spend any time outside, before or afterwards. I decided that my new lace skirt from Monki (yes Monki again!) would be the perfect way to glam up a plain top and add a bit of interest to a more practical outfit. This leather biker jacket has long been a favourite of mine and the cropped length works well with longer skirt lengths (and particularly well with black semi sheer maxi skirts it seems!)  ;) I think I was trying to pop my collar up here but I'm really not sure!

Black lace skirt, red top, leather jacket, black tights and boots 1
Leather jacket: New Look, top: Matalan, skirt: Monki, tights: Tesco, boots: c/o Spartoo, awkward pose: model's own
This top is the red version of the one I wore in this outfit which I bought as I loved the white one so much. It's impossible to get a flattering photo of but I love how it drapes and the looser sleeves are perfect for going between the blustery outdoors and the stifling heat of the pub.

Black lace skirt, red top, black tights and boots 2

The lace detail of this skirt (I love the fact it is called Doris!) is stunning and although the length is nearing maxi rather than midi on me (I fell foul of model leg length delusions again!) I think the sheer overlay is more flattering way to wear longer lengths, for people like me who  have stumpy rather than willowy legs with a midi length.  I love the fact that the lace also seems quite versatile, I think it looks fairly elegant here but I imagine it would look equally fab, all grunged up...

Also, scalloped hems ROCK...
This red lipstick is an old favourite- seen first in this blogpost from May 2010 (!) and it is quite a bright blue-red which gives you the perfect scarlet pout. My vow to wear more of my lipsticks is definitely working! These photos were taken the day before I finally got my hair cut and I think you can tell it needs cutting here- it got so long and wispy. Luckily the 'swoosh it and pin it' method helps to disguise its less than pristine style...

What do you wear to the pub? How do you disguise a bad hair day?

Bejewelled...

This skirt is one of those things that I really love but don't ever wear as there is just so much material in it. The last time I wore it was back in February and I haven't worn it since but it is surprisingly warm and I hate seeing things unworn and unloved in my wardrobe so I decided to wear it last weekend when we actually had some sunshine!

Top: Kookai via eBay, belt: Miss Selfridge c/o Voucher Codes, skirt: M&S, , bag: Marc B via ASOS, shoes: Betty London c/o Spartoo
There's something about this skirt that demands something a bit fancier and I thought this bejewelled belt would be perfect to tie in the slight sheen of the skirt to the neutral jumper. This jumper is another one of those things that just gets passed over, Mark bought it for me after he shrunk my beloved Toast jumper (RIP) and I think that is why I don't wear it as often as I should-- does anyone else get so emotionally attached to their clothing?!

I bought this bag at the beginning of my second year of uni and I was a woman obsessed; I took this bag with me everywhere. I think this was partly due to the fact it reminded me of Neapolitan ice cream, never a bad thing in my opinion! Unfortunately over-use meant that the strap came off but a natty bit of ribbon and a spot of ingenuity meant that I could still use it as a shoulder bag although I like it as a clutch too as it is reassuringly squishy (technical term, dontcha know...)

I have a lot of brown shoes and boots (see hereherehereherehere or here for proof!) but when I saw this beautiful pair, I knew that another addition to my collection was inevitable! In my defence I have been looking for a pair of dark brown flats for a while  and this Betty London pair are ridiculously comfy thanks to arch support (hallelujah!) The leather is really soft and I love the fact that the shoes don't gape around the body of your feet. I have been consistently impressed with Betty London as a brand and I would definitely recommend them!

Do you get emotionally attached to clothes?
P.S. This post was done in collaboration with Spartoo

Uniqlo x Orla Kiely: the top...

This top is the last of my pieces from the Uniqlo x Orla Kiely collection (I promise I will stop banging on about it soon!) I initially ordered this one but that was in the parcel that went walkabouts and they only had XS left when I went to reorder it :( Apologies for the annoying strand of hair in this first photograph, I didn't realise that it had fallen out of my plait until I looked at the photographs! I loved the printed top and the camel coat but I did feel like I was dressed like a mum from the 1970s...

Coat:Dannimac via my mum, dress: NW3 from Hobbs, top: Uniqlo x Orla Kiely, socks: Marks & Spencer, boots: gift from my parents, bag: Fiorelli (birthday gift)
As soon as the top arrived, I knew it would be perfect for pairing with my beloved denim dress. I am always on the lookout for nice printed tops for layering with and this is lovely. The cotton is light but still warm; and best of all, this t-shirt holds its shape when you wash it, which my cheaper t-shirts definitely don't.

I also dug out my brown 'riding boots'. I got these as a present after doing well in my GCSEs (all those years ago!) and although I wear them most winters, I'm never sure what to pair them with as they are quite a statement piece. The knee high socks added some warmth and I was able to live out another Clarks shoes fantasy- I LOVE the advert with the socks layered under the boots!

Isn't this just the cutest print?! I can see it paired with my green maxi skirt and my fur gilet, something I can definitely imagine Stevie Nicks wearing. Or maybe it's just having Fleetwood Mac playing in the car over the last few weeks that is just making me think that!

What's your favourite seventies look? How would you style my boots?

Mulberry maxi...

Another day, another maxi skirt. I am slowly building up quite a collection of these little beauties and this is probably one of my favourites. I picked it up in the M&S sale (at the same time as these shoes) and have been waiting for an opportunity to wear it... It reminds me of a cross between this midi skirt and the pleated maxi skirt from Hobbs that was so popular, not bad for £12! I think Inslee must have been inspired by my outfit too, she posted this a couple of days after I wore this!

Jumper: Miss Selfridge, skirt: Marks & Spencer, belt: New Look, bag: Fiorelli (gift), boots: Carvela
I loved the colour and the weight of the skirt as soon as I saw it and the slight sheen to it makes me think that it would look equally good dressed up as it does dressed down. The leopard belt provided a nice contrast and was the focal point for all the brown accessories...

I couldn't believe just how much material was in this skirt! I'm pretty sure I would have lifted off the ground with a sharp gust of wind here :P

Plus, the skirt is so long that I was able to wear my jeans underneath for an extra layer of warmth. Who says fashion is impractical?!

I think this may be the most luxurious of all the maxi skirts I own and I can't wait to pair it with dusky pinks and floral prints in spring!

Do you like pleated maxi skirts? How do you make fashion practical?

Greyscale...

The last time I wore this skirt it was much warmer, so this time I wore longer sleeves to combat the winter chill. I thought the dove grey of this blouse added a more wintry feel to the skirt which I loved, even if I am wearing all Topshop!  I can't wait for the warmer weather though, I think this blouse would look fab with the green for Spring...

Blouse: Topshop, skirt: Topshop, boots: New Look
The detailing on the front of this shirt is absolutely gorgeous and handily makes it much more wearable as it is less sheer on the front, meaning that I will be able to wear it for work too!

I bought these shoes with a Christmas voucher in the hope that I would have a pair of party shoes that I would actually be able to walk in! ;)

For me, the best part of wearing a maxi skirt is how freeing it is, especially in such a vibrant colour, it just demands that you have fun! Hence the 'flying' being done whilst perched on a rock...

What. A. Fool.

I  leave you with what has to be my favourite Christmas present, a cute crocheted phone case in the shape of an owl from Mark. What more could you ask for?!

How would you wintrify this skirt? What was your favourite Christmas present?
